Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Impostors

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the whispers of the city's most powerful families. The annual Founders' Gala was the premier social event of the year, a gathering where fortunes were made and broken over polite conversation.

Adrian arrived wearing a custom tuxedo, his chest puffed out with pride. Beside him, Celeste was practically vibrating with excitement. She wore a revealing, heavily sequined red gown and clutched her black Birkin as if it were an extension of her body. She had insisted on bringing it, claiming it was her "lucky charm" for the night.

"Look at them, Adrian," Celeste whispered, gesturing toward the VIP balcony where the truly elite sat. "They're all looking at us. They know who we are."

"They will after tonight," Adrian smiled, adjusting his cufflinks. He spotted Arthur Sterling, the elderly, highly respected CEO of the Sterling Group, standing near the grand staircase. "Come, Celeste. Let’s go greet our future partner."

As they approached, Adrian noticed that several high-society matriarchs, including the formidable Mrs. Montgomery, were standing nearby. He wanted them to witness his triumph.

"Mr. Sterling," Adrian said, holding out his hand with an easy, confident smile. "A pleasure to see you tonight. I believe we have some paperwork to finalize later this evening?"

Arthur Sterling turned, looking at Adrian’s outstretched hand with a cold, blank expression. He did not take it.

"Mr. Vale," Sterling said, his voice carrying clearly over the soft chamber music. "I’m afraid there has been a change of plans regarding our joint venture."

Adrian’s smile faltered. "A change of plans? I thought the board had approved the preliminary terms."

"The board approved those terms under the impression that Vale Enterprises was a stable, solvent entity," Sterling said coldly. "However, over the last forty-eight hours, we have been made aware of several... irregularities. Federal tax audits, frozen offshore accounts, and a pending lawsuit regarding grand-scale asset fraud. The Sterling Group does not partner with criminals, Mr. Vale."

A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding crowd. Celeste's face drained of color, her grip tightening on her Birkin.

"Mr. Sterling, please," Adrian stammered, his confidence evaporating in an instant. "This is a misunderstanding! It's just a disgruntled ex-wife trying to make trouble. She has no proof, no standing—"

"Actually, she has both," a calm, powerful voice echoed from the grand staircase.

The crowd parted instantly, creating a wide path. Down the stairs walked Alistair and Eleanor Vance, looking like royalty. Alistair wore a classic double-breasted tuxedo, his presence radiating immense, undeniable authority. Eleanor was radiant in deep emerald green silk.

But it was the woman walking between them who captured every eye in the room.

It was Evelyn.

She was breathtaking. The swollen, exhausted woman from the hospital was gone. In her place stood a queen. She wore a custom-fitted black velvet gown that accentuated her restored, elegant figure. Her hair was styled in soft, glamorous waves, and a flawless diamond necklace—a Vance family heirloom worth millions—glittered against her collarbone. Her eyes were calm, cold, and utterly devoid of fear.

"Evelyn?" Adrian gasped, his jaw dropping. "What... what are you doing here? How did you even get in?"

He looked at her parents, then back at Evelyn, his mind desperately trying to connect the dots. "Vance... your maiden name is Vance..."

"Did you really think my daughter was an orphan, Adrian?" Alistair Vance asked, his voice like rolling thunder. He stepped forward, looking down at Adrian as if he were an annoying insect. "Did you really think the Vance family would allow a cheap, social-climbing fraud to humiliate our only child and steal her inheritance?"

The ballroom fell into a stunned, dead silence.

"The Vance family?" Celeste whispered, her voice trembling. "The... the sovereign wealth Vances? The ones who own half the shipping docks and the banking sector?"

"The very same, Ms. Monroe," Eleanor Vance said, her gaze sweeping over Celeste with absolute disdain. "And by the way, that Birkin bag you are clutching so desperately? The serial number belongs to a batch of counterfeit goods seized by customs last year. My family owns the luxury conglomerate that manufactures the authentic ones. We know a fake when we see one. Just as we know a fake couple when we see them."

Laughter erupted from the crowd. Celeste looked down at her beloved bag, her face burning with a mix of shame and horror.

Adrian felt the room spinning. "Evelyn... honey... please. This is a family matter. We can talk about this. The babies—"

"The babies are safe, Adrian," Evelyn said, her voice clear, strong, and utterly indifferent to his distress. "They are at home, protected by people who actually care about their future. You, on the other hand, are about to become very familiar with the inside of a courtroom."
