Chapter 3 - The Quiet Storm

For the first month, Evelyn did nothing but heal. She lived in the west wing of her parents’ estate, surrounded by a team of private doctors, pediatric nurses, and nutritionists. Her skin regained its luminous glow, the dark circles under her eyes vanished, and her body, nurtured by specialized physical therapists, healed stronger than before.

She spent hours holding her boys. Logan had her father's intense, observant eyes. Lucas had her mother's calm, serene disposition. And Liam, the smallest, possessed a fierce, fiery energy that made her laugh. They were her world, and the thought of Adrian or Celeste ever coming near them filled her with a protective fury she hadn't known she possessed.

Her mother, Eleanor Vance, walked into the nursery one afternoon, holding a silver tray with hot tea. Eleanor was a woman of timeless beauty, her silver hair styled in a perfect chignon, her presence commanding absolute respect.

"The press is beginning to sniff around, darling," Eleanor said, sitting gracefully on the velvet armchair. "Adrian has been bragging at his country club about his 'imminent upgrade' and how he 'freed himself' from a domestic anchor. He’s telling everyone you ran away with the children out of shame."

Evelyn took a sip of her tea, her expression serene. "Let him talk. The louder he brags, the more foolish he will look when the curtain falls."

"Your father has finished the preliminary audit of Vale Enterprises," Eleanor continued, a cold, elegant smile gracing her lips. "It turns out your husband is not the financial prodigy he claims to be. He has been leveraging his projects using highly unstable mezzanine loans, and more than 40% of his capital is tied up in a offshore account registered in Panama under Celeste Monroe's name. It seems our dear Celeste has been skimming from him, too."

Evelyn laughed, a genuine, light sound. "A thief robbing a thief. How poetic. What about the Sterling Group project?"

"They are scheduled to sign the joint venture agreement next Tuesday at the annual Founders' Gala," Eleanor said, her eyes flashing with anticipation. "Your father is the majority shareholder of the Sterling Group, though Adrian has no idea. He thinks he is dealing with a board of independent directors."

"Then we let him sign the preliminary terms," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a cool, decisive register. "Let him pop the champagne. Let him believe he has finally made it into the ultra-elite circle. And then, at the Gala, we will hand him his divorce papers."

"Not just the divorce papers, my love," Eleanor corrected gently, placing her hand over Evelyn's. "We will hand him his ruin."

Meanwhile, in the penthouse, the atmosphere was growing tense. Celeste had spent nearly eighty thousand dollars on Adrian’s credit cards in a single week, purchasing jewelry, designer clothes, and another Birkin bag to add to her collection.

"Adrian, the bank called about the primary mortgage on this place," Celeste complained, throwing herself onto the sofa. "They said there’s a discrepancy with the title. Some issue with a prior trust fund. Tell them to fix it. It's embarrassing."

Adrian frowned, looking up from his laptop. His main project was delayed due to a sudden, highly aggressive environmental audit that had halted construction on his flagship luxury tower. "It's just a clerical error, Celeste. Don't worry about it. Once the Sterling deal is signed next week, we’ll buy a mansion in Bel-Air and leave this place behind anyway."

"Well, you need to hurry up," she pouted. "The country club ladies are looking at me strange. That old hag Mrs. Montgomery refused to sit at my table yesterday. She whispered something about 'new money pretenders' as I walked by."

Adrian's jaw clenched. He hated being looked down upon. He had clawed his way up from a middle-class background, and he was desperate for the validation of the city's old money. "Next Tuesday, Celeste. The Founders' Gala. We will be the guests of honor. Once the Sterling contract is signed, Mrs. Montgomery will be begging for your attention."

He looked at his phone, realizing he hadn't heard from Evelyn's lawyers. She must be desperate, he thought, a cruel smirk appearing on his face. She's probably hiding in some run-down apartment, trying to stretch her meager savings, too proud to beg. Let her starve a little longer. It will make her sign the custody waiver that much faster.
