Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Empire

The quiet of the private hospital wing was absolute, a stark contrast to the chaotic storm raging inside Evelyn’s chest. The nurse who had hurried out under Adrian’s dismissive glare returned ten minutes later, not with security, but with a look of sheer terror and reverence on her face. Behind her stood three men in tailored charcoal suits, their expressions carved from granite.

"Mrs. Vale," the leading man said, bowing slightly. "Your father has initiated Protocol Primrose. We are here to secure you and the young masters."

Evelyn closed her eyes, letting out a breath she felt she had been holding for five years. Five years of hiding her identity to "prove" to herself that she could build a life based on pure love, free from the suffocating influence of the Vanderbilt-esque sovereign wealth dynasty her parents controlled. Her father, Alistair Vance, was a man whose name was whispered in the highest corridors of global finance. Her mother, Eleanor Vance, was a matriarch of old-world steel.

To Adrian, she had simply been Evelyn Vance, an orphan with a modest inheritance and a quiet disposition. He had met her at a local charity gallery, assumed her simple elegance was the mark of a middle-class girl with aesthetic sensibilities, and set about grooming her to be his perfect, submissive trophy wife. He wanted a woman he could control, a woman who would look beautiful at his arm without overshadowing his rising status as a mid-tier real estate developer.

"Is the transport ready, Thomas?" Evelyn asked, her voice cracking slightly but gaining strength with every word.

"The medical transport helicopter is on the helipad, ma'am. Dr. Harrison and a team of neonatal specialists are already on board. The boys will be moved first." Thomas, her family's chief of security for over two decades, stepped forward, his eyes softening as he looked at the three sleeping infants. "Your father has already acquired the hospital's outstanding bonds. As of ten minutes ago, this entire medical network is a subsidiary of Vance Holdings. Mr. Vale’s access privileges have been permanently revoked."

A faint, cold smile touched Evelyn's lips. Her father never did anything by halves. "And the house?"

"The penthouse Adrian transferred to Ms. Monroe's name was purchased using a shell company that ultimately drew from a trust fund set up in your name, Ms. Evelyn. Legally, the transfer constitutes grand-scale asset dissipation and bank fraud, as the funds were never his to collateralize. We have already initiated a freeze on the title." Thomas bowed. "The trap is set. We await your command to spring it."

"Let them enjoy their temporary victory," Evelyn whispered, feeling the raw ache in her body begin to numb under the onset of cold, calculating resolve. "Let Celeste unpack her bags. Let Adrian brag to his business partners. The higher they climb, Thomas, the harder they hit the concrete."

Within thirty minutes, Evelyn and her three sons—whom she quietly named Logan, Lucas, and Liam—were lifted high into the night sky, leaving the city lights behind. They flew toward the Vance estate, a sprawling, heavily fortified sanctuary tucked away in the hills, far out of reach of Adrian Vale's petty greed.

The next morning, Adrian stood in the master bedroom of the penthouse, sipping espresso. Celeste was draped across the silk sheets, admiring her reflection in a hand mirror, her black Birkin resting prominently on the nightstand.

"She didn't even fight," Celeste giggled, her voice grating on Adrian’s nerves slightly, though he quickly masked it with a proud smile. "I expected more of a scene. She just sat there, looking like a drowned rat."

"Evelyn is weak," Adrian said, buttoning his shirt. "She has no backbone. I married her because she was easy to manage, but she became dead weight. A man of my rising stature needs a woman who commands a room, Celeste. Someone who belongs in the high-society pages."

"And the babies?" Celeste asked carelessly, tracing her red manicured nail along her jawline. "What are we doing about his little tax write-offs?"

"My lawyers will handle it. We'll offer her a meager monthly allowance in exchange for sole custody waivers. She can't afford to raise three boys on her own. She’ll sign them over eventually, or she'll drown in legal fees. Either way, they won't be our problem." Adrian checked his watch. "I have a meeting with the Sterling Group this afternoon. If they approve the luxury condo project, we'll be billionaires by the end of the year."

He walked to the window, looking out over the city, feeling like a king. He had the penthouse, the beautiful mistress, the booming business, and he had successfully discarded the boring, exhausted wife who had outlived her usefulness. He felt invincible.

He had no idea that at that very moment, a team of twenty elite forensic accountants and corporate attorneys were sitting in a soundproof boardroom on the eighty-fifth floor of Vance Tower, dissecting every transaction he had made in the last ten years.
