Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past Cleared

Spring returned to Chicago with blooming tulips and a warm, refreshing breeze that swept through the city streets. But for the Rosetti family, spring brought something even more meaningful: closure.

Federal prosecutors announced that the final remnants of the New York syndicate network, which had tried to fracture Dominic's empire and harm Lily, had been formally indicted and dismantled. Victor and Paul had received lengthy prison sentences with no possibility of parole. The threat that had hung over the estate for years was finally, completely extinguished.

To celebrate, Dominic and Lena decided to host an intimate dinner party in the courtyard under the stars, inviting only their closest confidants — Marcus, Mrs. Bellamy, and a few trusted allies who had stood by them through thick and thin.

The table was set with fine china, flickering candles, and crystal glasses filled with vintage wine. Lily sat between Dominic and Lena, chattering happily about her school art project.

Marcus raised his glass, standing up at the head of the table. "To peace," he said simply, his sharp eyes softening with a rare smile. "And to family."

"To family," everyone echoed, glasses clinking in the warm night air.

Later that evening, after Lily had fallen asleep upstairs and their guests had departed, Dominic and Lena stood on the stone balcony overlooking the moonlit gardens. The fountain shaped like a wolf with wings trickled softly in the courtyard below.

Dominic wrapped his arms around Lena's waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of jasmine in her hair.

"Penny for your thoughts, wife," he murmured softly.

Lena leaned back against his chest, her hands resting over his. "I was just thinking about that rainy night in the alley. How easily I could have kept walking. If I had turned my head the other way... I never would have known what true happiness felt like."

Dominic turned her around in his arms, looking deeply into her eyes, his expression fierce and tender all at once. "You didn't look away, Lena. Because you were never meant to be a waitress struggling to survive. You were meant to be right here, saving my world."

"And you saved mine," Lena whispered, pulling him down into a passionate, lingering kiss beneath the starlit Chicago sky.
