Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Garden

Three weeks passed in a blur of rigorous training, stolen moments of laughter with Lily, and the heavy, constant undercurrent of danger. Marcus proved to be a brutal taskmaster, teaching Lena the basics of situational awareness, knife defense, and how to spot a tail in a crowded street. Her hands, once calloused from carrying heavy coffee pots, now developed new calluses from holding steel.
Yet, despite the fortress-like security of the estate, Lena felt a growing sense of unease.
It was late Tuesday evening. Lily had finally fallen asleep after a long afternoon of painting watercolors in the courtyard. Dominic was away in the city attending a high-level syndicate meeting, leaving the estate under the watchful eyes of his guards.
Lena walked out into the moonlit gardens to clear her head. The night air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine. She wandered past the wolf fountain, its stone wings casting long, eerie shadows across the cobblestones.
As she turned toward the eastern wall, she noticed a flicker of light near the old greenhouse ruins — a restricted zone that Mrs. Bellamy had warned her never to approach.
Curiosity killed the cat, Lena muttered to herself, but her feet moved forward anyway. Training kicked in; she stayed low, keeping to the shadows of the boxwood hedges, her breathing shallow and controlled.
As she crept closer, she heard voices. Low, urgent, and tense.
"...if the boss finds out about the shipment, we're all dead," a man hissed. It sounded like Paul, one of Dominic's senior logistics managers.
"He won't find out unless someone talks," a second voice replied. This one was smooth, polished, and terrifyingly calm — a voice Lena had heard briefing guards earlier that week. Victor, Dominic's personal legal advisor. "The board in New York is backing our move. Once Rosetti's attention is fully split by protecting that brat and her new nanny, we strike at the docks."
Lena froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. A traitor inside the inner circle. Victor and Paul were selling out the family.
She reached into her pocket to grab her burner phone, intending to call Dominic immediately, when her heel snapped a dry twig beneath the grass.
Snap.
Silence fell instantly over the ruins.
"Who's there?" Victor's voice cut through the dark, accompanied by the distinct, metallic click of a pistol slide being pulled back.
Lena didn't hesitate. She bolted.
"Over there! Grab her!" Paul shouted.
Footsteps crunched violently behind her down the gravel path. Lena ducked behind a massive oak tree as a bullet whizzed past her ear, burying itself deep into the bark with a sickening thud. Adrenaline surged through her veins, burning hot and fierce. She wasn't just a scared waitress anymore; she was Lily's shield.
She sprinted sideways through the labyrinthine maze of hedges, using the shadows she had memorized during her afternoon patrols with Marcus. She could hear them closing in, heavy boots trampling the manicured lawns.
Just as a hand reached out to grab her shoulder from behind, the heavy roar of a sports car engine tore through the front gates. Headlights swept across the gardens like searching lasers.

"Boss is back!" someone cursed in the distance. The footsteps abruptly stopped, and the sounds of pursuit faded into the rustling leaves.
Lena collapsed against the stone wall of the west wing, gasping for air, her hands trembling uncontrollably. She had survived, but she now carried a secret that could get her killed.
