Chapter 6 - Healing and Hope

With the traitors behind bars and the New York syndicate retreating in disarray, the Rosetti estate finally breathed a sigh of relief. The heavy, oppressive tension that had hung over the halls for weeks evaporated, replaced by sunlight and laughter.

In the grand courtyard, Lily was chasing a golden retriever puppy that Dominic had gifted her for her seventh birthday. Her ringing laughter echoed off the white stone walls.

Lena sat on a wrought-iron bench nearby, sketching in a leather journal. Drawing had been an old passion she’d abandoned years ago when she had to work three jobs just to pay rent. Now, with financial security and peace of mind, the creativity was flowing back into her fingers.

Footsteps approached softly on the gravel. Dominic sat down on the bench beside her, a cup of steaming chamomile tea in his hand, which he handed to her.

"You're drawing again," Dominic observed, glancing at the sketchpad. It was a detailed drawing of Lily running with the puppy, her hair catching the afternoon light.

"I used to do it all the time, before life got too loud," Lena admitted, taking a small sip of the tea. "Thank you for this, Dominic. The puppy... she hasn't stopped smiling since yesterday."

"She smiles because you're here, Lena," Dominic said quietly, turning his head to look at her. His dark eyes were warm, devoid of the cold calculation that defined his underworld life. "And so do I."

Lena felt her cheeks flush warmly. She set the tea down on the table. "I thought when I signed that contract, I was just a bodyguard. An employee."

"You were never just an employee," Dominic confessed, reaching out to gently take her hand. His fingers intertwined with hers, strong and steady. "From the moment you knelt in that wet alley and gave my daughter your only sweater... you became the heart of this home."

Lena looked into his eyes, seeing not the feared mafia boss, but a man who loved deeply, fiercely, and faithfully. "And what happens now? The enemies are gone. The debt is paid."

"Now, you decide what you want," Dominic said, his voice husky with emotion. "You can stay here as my partner, as Lily's mother figure... as my wife, if you'll have me."

Lena's breath caught in her throat. The waitress with eight dollars in her pocket had found a kingdom she never knew existed, but more importantly, she had found a family.

"I don't need a contract for that," Lena whispered with a soft smile.

Dominic leaned in, and as their lips met under the afternoon sun, the world outside faded away entirely.
