Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage and the First Shadow

The morning sun filtered through stained-glass windows in the east wing, casting fractured rainbows across the Persian rug of Lena's new suite. It was larger than her entire former apartment, complete with a canopy bed, a private bathroom stocked with imported soaps, and a wardrobe filled with clothes that still had store tags on them.
She stared at her reflection in the full-length mirror. The pale blue sweater was gone, washed and folded neatly on a chair, replaced by a soft cashmere turtleneck dress. She didn't look like a diner waitress anymore. She looked like a ghost wearing someone else's life.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Miss Marks?" Mrs. Bellamy entered carrying a silver tray with hot tea and fresh pastries. "Mr. Rosetti asked if you'd join him and Miss Lily in the conservatory once you've eaten."
"How is she?" Lena asked, gripping the edge of the dresser.
"The doctor says the fever broke an hour before dawn. She's asking for you."
Lena's chest tightened, a strange mixture of terror and fierce protectiveness washing over her. "Lead the way, Mrs. Bellamy."
The conservatory was a massive greenhouse dome filled with orchids, ferns, and lemon trees that bloomed year-round. Dominic sat at a wrought-iron table, a black coffee in hand, reviewing a leather-bound ledger. Lily sat propped up on a velvet chaise lounge nearby, wrapped in a fluffy white blanket, her silver-blue eyes lighting up the moment Lena stepped through the glass archway.
"Lena!" Lily cried out, stretching her small arms.
Dominic looked up, his sharp features softening just a fraction. He stood, pulling out the chair opposite him. "Good morning, Lena. Sleep well?"
"I... yes. Thank you, Mr. Rosetti," Lena said, walking straight to the chaise instead. She knelt beside Lily, gently touching the child's forehead. The fever was entirely gone. "How are you feeling, sweetheart?"
"My tummy hurts a little, but Daddy gave me honey tea," Lily whispered, her fingers playing with the edge of Lena's sleeve. "Are you going to stay today? Will you read me a story about dragons?"
"I'm staying right here," Lena promised, offering a warm smile. "Dragons and kingdoms, whatever you want."
Dominic watched them from the table, his expression unreadable. "She hasn't smiled like that in six months, Miss Marks. Not since the threats started."
Lena looked back at him, her voice steady. "What happened to her, Mr. Rosetti? Who would hurt a little girl?"
Dominic took a slow sip of his coffee, his eyes turning cold and hard as flint. "My world has enemies, Lena. Men who want what I control, who want to break the Rosetti family. They thought getting to Lily would bring me to my knees. They were wrong. But it proved to me that my inner circle isn't as clean as I thought."
"You think someone inside betrayed you?"
"I know it," Dominic said softly. "And until I find the rat, Lily cannot leave this estate. That's why you are here. You are her shadow. Wherever she goes, you go. My head of security, Marcus, will brief you on protocols after lunch."
As if summoned, a heavy footstep echoed behind them. Marcus stepped into the conservatory — the same lean, sharp-eyed man from the alley. He gave Lena a nod that lacked any warmth. "Everything in order, Boss?"
"Show Miss Marks the armory and the panic rooms," Dominic instructed. "She needs to know every escape route in this house."

Lena stood up, brushing down her dress. Before she followed Marcus, she looked back at Dominic. "I'm a waitress, Mr. Rosetti. I don't know how to shoot a gun or fight off professional killers."
Dominic met her gaze, his voice deep and absolute. "You don't need to fight them, Lena. You just need to keep my daughter breathing until I get there. And I am always close by."
