Chapter 9 - The Crown of Curls

Three years passed.
Life in our new home was filled with laughter, academic achievements, and quiet Sunday mornings. I had received a major promotion at my architectural firm, allowing me to fully secure our financial future.
Lily was now ten years old. Her hair had grown back completely—longer, thicker, and more beautiful than ever. Her brown curls cascaded down her shoulders, catching the sunlight just like they used to. But this time, they weren't just a symbol of her beauty; they were a symbol of her resilience.
One afternoon, Lily came home from school holding a flyer.
"Daddy! Look!" she gasped, running into the kitchen. "The school is hosting a Mother-Daughter and Father-Daughter Charity Gala! It’s a royal-themed ball!"
I looked at the flyer, my heart swelling. "A royal ball, huh? Does that mean I have to wear a tuxedo?"
"Yes! And I get to wear a ballgown!" she bounced on her heels. "And Daddy... can you do my hair?"
My breath caught in my throat. The last time she wanted her hair styled by family, it had ended in a nightmare. Over the last three years, we had slowly built up her confidence, but she had always been protective of her hair.
"Are you sure you want me to do it, Lily pad?" I asked gently.
"Yes," she said, looking at me with absolute trust. "Because you always make me feel like a real princess."
On the night of the gala, I stood behind Lily in front of the vanity mirror. I carefully brushed her long, shiny curls, pinning them up into an elegant, royal half-updo, securing it with a small, sparkling silver tiara we had bought together.
When I was finished, Lily stood up and smoothed down her lavender ballgown. She looked up at her reflection, and then at me.
"Thank you, Daddy," she whispered, her eyes shining. "It’s perfect."

"You are perfect, Lily," I said, offering her my arm. "Shall we go to the ball, Your Highness?"
She giggled, looping her arm through mine. "We shall!"
