Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary

With the financial help from my repentant family and a generous loan from my bank—secured by the rising equity of the house—I hired a professional restoration crew. I decided I wasn't going to sell the house. Instead, I was going to turn it into a sanctuary for Lily and me.

I involved Lily in every step of the process.

"What color do you want your room to be, Lily pad?" I asked her as we walked through the gutted upstairs.

"Bright yellow!" she cheered, her voice carrying a joyful energy I hadn't heard in weeks. "Like the sunshine!"

"Yellow it is," I laughed, writing it down on my notepad.

We spent the next month painting, choosing furniture, and planting a massive rose garden in the backyard—right where Beatrice’s toxic BBQ had once stood. We replaced the old grass with soft clover, planted apple trees, and built a beautiful wooden playset with a castle tower.

During this time, the legal system was moving swiftly. Beatrice’s attempts to countersue were thrown out of court by a judge who openly reprimanded her for wasting the court’s time.

My attorney, Eleanor, was relentless. She presented the recording, the medical reports, and the photos of the vandalized house. The judge was appalled. He ordered Beatrice to pay the full $54,000 in back rent, plus $30,000 in damages for the vandalism and $50,000 for the emotional distress caused to Lily.

Beatrice was officially bankrupt. Her flashy lifestyle, her expensive designer bags, and her pride were stripped away, piece by piece.
