Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks after the eviction deadline, I arrived at the house with a moving truck and a team of locksmiths. Beatrice and Chloe had left, but they hadn't gone quietly.

They had absolutely trashed the place.

The walls were spray-painted with insults. The kitchen cabinets were smashed, and they had poured quick-dry concrete down the drains. It was a final, petty act of vengeance meant to break my spirit and drain my remaining savings.

I stood in the ruined living room, a heavy weight pressing down on my chest. I had spent my life savings to buy this house for her, to keep her from being homeless, and this was how she repaid me.

"Hey, Artie."

I turned around to see Uncle Frank standing in the doorway. He looked older, tired, and deeply ashamed.

"What do you want, Frank?" I asked, my voice flat. "Come to tell me how much of an angel Beatrice is again?"

Frank winced. "No, Artie. I... I came to apologize. We all did. When we saw that video... when we realized what she did to little Lily... we couldn't believe we had been so blind. Beatrice has been manipulating all of us for years, playing the victim while bleeding you dry."

He walked over and handed me an envelope. I opened it to find a check for $15,000, signed by Frank, Aunt Clara, and several other cousins.

"It’s not enough to cover all the damage," Frank said softly, "but we want to help you rebuild. We want to make things right with you and Lily. We were wrong, Artie. Terribly wrong."

I stared at the check, feeling a complex wave of emotions. While I was furious at their past behavior, I saw the genuine remorse in Frank's eyes.

"Thank you, Frank," I said quietly. "But money won't fix the trust that was broken. If you want to make things right, show up for Lily. Help me show her that her family isn't entirely made of monsters."

Frank nodded vigorously, tears welling in his eyes. "We will, Artie. I promise you, we will."
