Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Vanessa replied within seconds, her tone dripping with passive-aggressive annoyance. “Honestly, if you’re going to be ungrateful about us trying to help Chloe learn sharing values, don’t bother coming over. I’m busy editing content.”
“I’m not coming to argue about sharing,” I typed back calmly. “I’m coming to show you what your livestream audience just watched.”
Silence followed. Five minutes passed. Ten minutes. Then my phone rang—not a text, but a direct call from David, my husband’s brother and Vanessa’s husband. David sounded frantic, his voice breathless.
“Hey… what is going on? Vanessa is crying in the kitchen, she says you’re threatening her over a haircut?”
“David, put me on speakerphone,” I said, my voice steady as steel. “And make sure Vanessa is listening.”
I heard shuffling on the other end, followed by Vanessa’s theatrical sniffles. “Look, I tried to do something nice, okay? If Sarah has no appreciation for modern parenting—”
“Shut up, Vanessa,” I interrupted, the coldness in my tone cutting right through her act. “I have the entire Starlight livestream downloaded. I watched you force Chloe to mutilate Lily’s hair against her will. I watched you ignore her bleeding ear. And worst of all, I watched you use your own daughter as a pawn for online clout while terrorizing both children.”
A sharp intake of breath echoed through the phone line. Vanessa’s voice dropped its influencer sweetness, turning shrill and panicked. “You… you weren't supposed to see that! That was an unlisted exclusive stream, you—you hacked my account!”
“It was sent to my subscriber feed, Vanessa. You forgot I was still subscribed from your birthday party,” I said coldly. “Emma is watching Lily right now. David, if you have any sense left, you better make sure Vanessa is sitting at that kitchen table when I walk through your front door in fifteen minutes. Because if she isn't, I’m not just sending this video to child protective services—I’m sending it directly to every brand sponsor, news outlet, and follower on your Golden Morning Mama page.”
I hung up before either of them could say another word.
I walked out of the office and knelt in front of Lily, who was busy coloring a picture with Emma.
“Mommy has to go talk to Auntie Vanessa for a little bit,” I said softly, stroking her cheek away from the damaged hair. “Emma is going to stay right here with you. I promise you, nobody will ever hurt you like that again.”
Lily looked up, her big eyes searching my face. “Are you going to be brave, Mommy?”
May you like
“I’m going to be very brave,” I whispered, kissing her forehead.
Emma gave me a fierce, supportive nod as I grabbed my car keys. “Go get her. I’ve got things handled here.”
