Chapter 4 - The Scissors and the Silence

On the screen, Chloe held the heavy metal shears like they weighed a ton. Tears welled up in the little girl's eyes. “Mommy, I don’t want to. Lily is crying.”

“You are doing a wonderful thing, Chloe. Look at the camera and smile for your fans,” Vanessa instructed, her hand gripping the back of Chloe’s neck just a little too firmly, guiding the child’s hand toward Lily’s head.

Lily tried to pull away, her voice cracking with fear. “Stop! Let me go home! I want my mommy!”

Vanessa leaned in close to Lily’s ear, whispering something that the microphone didn't fully catch, but the body language told the entire story: pure, calculated intimidation. She forced Lily’s head forward.

Snip.

The sound echoed sharply through my headphones.

Lily shrieked as a massive chunk of her dark braid fell into her lap. Chloe gasped, dropping the scissors as if they burned her, looking up at her mother in sheer horror. “Mommy, I cut her ear! I cut her ear!”

Vanessa didn’t flinch. She didn’t rush to get a bandage. Instead, she smoothly leaned in to block the camera angle with her own body, hiding the bleeding cut from the main lens while whispering fiercely to Chloe, “Keep your hands steady! Pick those scissors back up right now or you won’t get dinner tonight!”

For the next ten minutes, Vanessa forced Chloe to continue hacking at Lily’s hair while the poor girl sobbed quietly into her hands, utterly trapped under the gaze of thousands of strangers who thought they were watching a wholesome family craft session.

When the livestream finally ended, Vanessa turned off the camera, handed Lily the pink bucket hat, shoved the severed braid into a grocery bag, and walked her out to the car with a bright, cheerful wave.

I sat back in my chair, staring blindly at the monitor.

The evidence was right there. High-definition video, timestamped, complete with audio of Vanessa coercing a child into committing an act of physical assault, all broadcasted live to the internet.

My phone buzzed loudly on the desk, shattering the silence.

It was a text message from Vanessa. “Hope Lily had a wonderful time today! She looks so different and fresh. Let’s do it again soon! 💕😘”

My fingers flew across the keyboard. I didn’t yell. I didn’t threaten her. I simply downloaded the entire livestream archive directly to my hard drive, backed it up to cloud storage, and sent a single text back to Vanessa:

“We need to talk. Right now. At your house.”
