Chapter 3 - Behind the Pastel Filter

The video opened with Vanessa smiling brightly at the camera, adjusting her pastel pink linen apron. Chloe sat next to her, looking stiff and anxious, clutching a doll.

“Good morning, my sweet Starlight family!” Vanessa’s voice chimed with that sickeningly sweet influencer cadence. “Today is a very special day. My lovely niece Lily is coming over for a girls' bonding session. As you guys know, Chloe has been struggling a little bit with sharing lately, so we’re going to teach her a valuable lesson about letting go of physical attachments and spreading love evenly through the family.”

The chat sidebar scrolled furiously with heart emojis and supportive messages.

Ten minutes later, the front door chimed on audio, and Lily walked into the frame, her face lighting up with excitement. “Auntie Nessa! Chloe!”

“Welcome, sweet girl,” Vanessa cooed, hugging Lily tightly—just tight enough that the camera caught her adoring expression, but sharp enough that Lily winced slightly. “Go sit in the salon chair in the playroom, Chloe is so excited to give you a special makeover.”

For the first hour, it was relatively benign: face masks made of avocado and yogurt, giggles, and tiny cucumber slices over their eyes. But as the viewer count climbed past twenty thousand, Vanessa’s demeanor subtly shifted.

The chat started commenting on Lily. “Omg look at Lily’s gorgeous hair!” one user wrote. “That braid is amazing, Vanessa, I wish Chloe had hair like that.” “Lily looks like a literal porcelain doll. So naturally pretty.”

I watched Vanessa’s smile tighten. Her eyes flicked toward the side screen displaying the live chat, reading those comments in real-time. Her knuckles turned white as she held a makeup brush.

Then, Vanessa cleared her throat and turned to Chloe. “Do you see how much everyone loves Lily’s hair, sweetie?” she asked, her voice dropping into that controlled, low murmur that mothers use when they are commanding obedience without sounding harsh. “Do you remember what we talked about yesterday? When someone in the family has something special, and you want everyone to feel equal, what do we do?”

Chloe shrank back into her chair, her eyes darting nervously toward the camera, then to her mother. “We… we share, Mommy.”

“That’s right, darling,” Vanessa smiled, though her eyes were ice cold. “Lily has so much hair. More than she knows what to do with. And you’ve been feeling a little left out because your hair is short and manageable. Don’t you think it would be an act of true love if you helped Lily share her beauty with you?”

On the screen, Lily looked confused, her small hands coming up to touch her braid. “No, Auntie Nessa, my mommy said I shouldn’t cut my hair until I’m seven.”

“Oh, your mommy won’t mind, sweetheart,” Vanessa laughed lightly, though the sound was devoid of warmth. “It’s just hair. It grows back. Right, chat? Sharing is what family does.”

The chat exploded with comments cheering Vanessa on, completely oblivious to the coercion happening right in front of them. “Yes! Teach them early!” “Such a wonderful parenting lesson!”

And then, Vanessa stood up, walked over to the drawer, pulled out a pair of heavy barber shears, and placed them directly into Chloe’s trembling hands.

What happened next made my blood run so cold I couldn't even scream.
