Chapter 2 - The Digital Mirage and the First Fracture

Emma stayed with Lily, keeping her distracted with a jigsaw puzzle while I locked myself in the home office. My hands trembled as I opened my laptop, but inside my chest, the cold, heavy stone of fury had settled into absolute clarity. I typed in Vanessa’s handle: @GoldenMorningMama.
On the surface, everything looked serene. A new post had gone live just forty minutes ago—precisely when Vanessa had packed Lily into her car to send her home. The photo showed Chloe smiling broadly, holding a shiny pair of professional hairdressing scissors, while Vanessa stood behind her with her hands resting gently on Chloe’s shoulders. The caption read: "Little stylists in training! ✂️ 💕 Sharing is caring, and our little Chloe learned today that true beauty is about making everyone around us shine just as brightly. So proud of our generous girl sharing her favorite things with her sweet cousin! #GirlSpaDay #GentleParenting #SharingIsCaring #FamilyFirst"
My stomach heaved. Sharing? My daughter’s hair had been violently hacked off, her scalp gouged open, and Vanessa had spun it into a sickening public relations narrative about generosity.
I scrolled through the comments. Thousands of adoring fans were eating it up. “Oh, Vanessa, you are such an inspiration! Teaching them community at such a young age.” “Chloe is growing into such a sweet, giving angel just like her mama!” “I wish my sister-in-law was this cool. Goals!”
They had no idea. None of them knew that the scissors in Chloe's hand weren't toy props, or that Lily hadn't wanted to share a single strand of her hair. But what caught my eye wasn't the picture itself—it was a tiny detail in the background reflection of the living room mirror. A small, black, cylindrical device mounted on a tripod in the corner of Vanessa's aesthetic, minimalist playroom. A high-end streaming camera.
Vanessa didn't just record curated clips for Instagram Reels. She streamed. Sometimes she did unannounced, live “day-in-the-life” Q&As for her top-tier subscribers on a subscription platform called Starlight.
I grabbed my phone, pulled up my banking app, and searched my past transactions. Sure enough, three months ago, during a drunken birthday party at my brother David’s house, Vanessa had practically forced all of us to subscribe to her exclusive channel under the guise of “supporting family entrepreneurship.” I had completely forgotten about it.
I logged into the Starlight app, navigated to Vanessa’s archive, and held my breath as I tapped on her broadcast history. There it was: a live stream titled “Ultimate Cousin Spa & Makeover Session! 🌸 Live Now!” that had ended less than an hour before Lily came home.

The runtime was two hours and fifteen minutes.
I plugged in my headphones, clicked play, and watched my worst nightmares come to life on the screen.
