Chapter 7 - The Fallout

The explosion that followed was a masterclass in the destruction of a dynasty. Richard Sterling did not shout; instead, his voice became a razor-sharp blade that cut through thirty-two years of deception.
"You miserable, deceitful serpent," Richard hissed, staring down at Carol, who had collapsed onto the floor, clutching his leather shoes.
"Richard, please!" Carol cried, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "I did it for us! You wanted an heir so badly! You were going to leave me! I loved you too much to lose you!"
"You didn't love me," Richard snarled, kicking his foot back to free himself from her grasp. "You loved my money. You loved this house. You brought a bastard into my home and forced me to raise him as my prince!"
Mark stood in the center of the room, the DNA results slipping from his fingers and fluttering to the floor. His entire identity, his pride, his name—everything he had used to elevate himself above me and the rest of the world—had just evaporated.
"Dad..." Mark choked out, reaching toward the man who had raised him. "Dad, I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know!"
Richard turned his cold, calculating gaze onto Mark. "Do not call me Dad. You are not a Sterling. You have none of my blood in your veins. Every dollar I spent on your Ivy League education, every car I bought you, the VP position I handed to you on a silver platter—all of it was stolen."
"Please, Richard," Mark begged, tears streaming down his face. He looked exactly like his mother now—desperate, pathetic, and broken.
"Get out," Richard commanded, pointing a trembling finger toward the door. "Both of you. Get out of my house. By tomorrow morning, your corporate accounts will be frozen. Your security badges at Sterling Enterprises will be deactivated. The condo downtown will be locked. I will scrub your names from my life as if you never existed."
"Richard!" Carol shrieked.
"Rachel," I said softly, standing up from my chair and smoothing down my skirt. "I think our business here is done."
"Agreed," Rachel said, picking up her briefcase with a satisfied nod.
As we walked toward the door, Mark threw himself in front of me, grabbing my shoulders. "Elena, please! You have to help me! Lily is my daughter! We can fix this! I'll accept the divorce terms, I'll do whatever you want, just please don't leave me with nothing!"
I looked at Mark’s desperate face, remembering the cold, arrogant man who had stood over my hospital bed just two weeks ago, demanding a test to prove I was a liar.

"You wanted the truth, Mark," I said, removing his hands from my shoulders with effortless strength. "Now you have it. Good luck."
We walked out of the library, leaving the shattered remnants of the Sterling family to tear each other apart in the shadows of their own deceit.
