Chapter 2 - The Pale Matriarch

The silence in the hospital room was heavy, suffocating the joy that should have filled the space after Lily’s birth. I stared at Mark, my hands trembling against the cool hospital sheets, but my voice remained steady as I spoke to my attorney, Rachel.
"Yes, Rachel," I said, looking directly into my husband’s stunned eyes. "I need the divorce papers drafted immediately. Mark wants a DNA test. I want a dissolution of marriage."
Mark scoffed, though the sudden rigidity in his posture betrayed his alarm. "Are you serious, Elena? You’re divorcing me because I asked for reassurance? If you have nothing to hide, a DNA test shouldn't scare you. Your reaction just proves I'm right to doubt you."
"I am not scared of a science experiment, Mark," I whispered, my voice cutting through his defensive bravado. "I am disgusted by your lack of faith. You watched me carry this child for nine months. You held my hand through morning sickness. And the moment she arrives, you look at her like a liability. We are done."
Beside the bed, Carol looked as if she might faint. Her coffee cup slipped from her hands, clattering onto the linoleum floor and spilling dark liquid across the tiles. Neither Mark nor I looked down.
"Mark, please," Carol choked out, her voice barely audible. She stepped forward, her hands outstretched, gripping his forearm with a desperation that seemed entirely disproportionate to the moment. "Drop this. Right now. Apologize to Elena. Tell her you were out of your mind with exhaustion. Just... stop this madness."
Mark frowned, pulling his arm away from his mother's grasp. "Why are you taking her side, Mom? Dad always said a man has to protect his legacy. If this child isn't a Sterling, I'm not putting my name on that birth certificate. I have a right to know."
"You don't know what you're doing," Carol pleaded, her pale face slick with sudden sweat. She looked at me, her eyes wide with a terrifying blend of panic and sorrow. "Elena, please. Don't call the lawyer. Let's just talk about this privately. Mark didn't mean it."
"He meant every word, Carol," I said, gently adjusting the blanket around Lily, who let out a soft, innocent sigh. "And so do I."
The nurse, Dana, stepped forward, her professional demeanor firmly back in place despite the domestic warfare unfolding in front of her. "Mr. Sterling, I’m going to have to ask you and your mother to leave the room. The patient needs to rest, and we need to monitor the baby’s vitals in peace."
Mark threw his hands up in the air. "Fine. I’ll leave. But the lab is coming up here to swab this kid, Elena. Don't think you can hide behind hospital regulations."
He turned and stormed out of the room, the heavy wooden door swinging shut behind him. Carol didn't follow him immediately. She stood rooted to the spot, staring at me with hollow, haunted eyes.
"You've ruined everything," Carol whispered to me, her voice trembling.
"I didn't do anything but give birth to a beautiful baby girl," I replied coldly. "Your son ruined his own family."
May you like
"No," Carol said, a tear finally escaping her eye as she backed away toward the door. "You don't understand, Elena. If he pushes for this test... it won't just be your marriage that ends. It will be everything."
Before I could ask her what she meant, she turned and fled into the corridor, leaving me alone with my daughter and the quiet beep of the heart monitor.
