Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Two weeks later, I was back in my own home—a beautiful, sunlit craftsman house in East Nashville that I had purchased with my own money before I ever met Mark. My mother had flown in to help me with Lily, providing the warmth and safety that the Sterling family had completely lacked.

Mark had moved out of our home the day I was discharged from the hospital, taking up residence in a luxury high-rise downtown, courtesy of his father’s corporate account. He hadn't called to ask about Lily once. His only communications came through his high-priced attorney, demanding immediate compliance with the DNA results the moment they were finalized.

The fateful call came on a rainy Tuesday morning.

"Elena, the results are in," Rachel said over the speakerphone. Her voice carried a strange, breathless quality. "The lab has uploaded the full genetic report to the secure portal. Mark’s attorney has already downloaded it. They’ve called an emergency meeting at Richard Sterling’s estate in Belle Meade for two o'clock this afternoon."

"Are we invited?" I asked, changing Lily's diaper with practiced ease.

"Mark insisted you be there," Rachel replied. "He wants a grand confrontation. He thinks he’s about to expose you in front of his parents and strip you of everything. He doesn't know what his mother told you."

"I'll be there," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "Dress for a storm, Rachel."

At exactly two o'clock, Rachel and I walked into the grand library of the Sterling estate. The room was the epitome of old-money opulence—mahogany bookshelves lining the walls, a massive stone fireplace, and heavy velvet curtains.

Richard Sterling sat behind his massive executive desk, looking like an emperor on a throne. Carol sat on the sofa to his right, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold her teacup. Mark stood by the window, a smug, triumphal smirk plastered across his face. He held a thick white envelope in his hands.

"Ah, Elena," Mark said, stepping forward as we entered. "Nice of you to show up. I hope you enjoyed your little game while it lasted, because it ends today."

"Cut the theatrics, Mark," I said, sitting down in one of the leather armchairs. Rachel sat beside me, placing her briefcase on her lap. "You called us here. Read the results."

Richard leaned forward, his bushy eyebrows knitting together. "Elena, I must say, I am deeply disappointed in how you've handled this. Divorcing my son because he asked for clarity is a childish temper tantrum. If the child is a Sterling, you will apologize, drop the lawsuit, and we will move past this."

"Let's see if she's a Sterling first, Dad," Mark gloated. He tore open the envelope with dramatic flair, pulling out the multi-page document. He skipped directly to the final page, his eyes scanning for the conclusion.

"Here it is," Mark announced, his voice booming with unearned confidence. "The probability of paternity regarding the child, Lily Sterling, and the alleged father, Mark Sterling, is..."

He paused. His brow furrowed. The smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a look of intense confusion.

"What?" Mark muttered, squinting at the paper.

"Read it, Mark," I urged softly.

"It says... it says 99.99%," Mark stammered, his face flushing a deep, embarrassed red. "The biological father is... me. Lily is my daughter."
