Chapter 4 - Drawing the Line

I sat in the hospital bed, holding my sleeping daughter, looking at the woman who had built her entire life on a monumental lie. The irony was dazzling, almost cruel. Mark’s toxic paranoia, fueled by the very patriarchal arrogance his father had beaten into him, was about to destroy the very foundation of his existence.

"Let me get this straight," I said, my voice cutting through Carol's frantic breathing. "You allowed your son to grow up believing he was a prince inherited to an empire. You allowed him to become so arrogant that he would insult his own wife and daughter at birth. And now, you want me to sacrifice my dignity to protect your thirty-year-old lie?"

"Please, Elena," Carol begged, dropping to her knees beside my bed. "I am begging you as a mother. If Richard finds out, he will ruin us. He controls the banks, the properties, the family trusts. Mark will have nothing. Lily will have nothing."

"Lily has me," I said fiercely, my heart pounding with a sudden, unshakeable strength. "And she has my family. I don't care about the Sterling money, Carol. I never did. Mark thought he was marrying down when he married me, but I have a thriving company built on my own hard work. My daughter will never starve."

"But Mark—"

"Mark brought this on himself," I interrupted. "He stood at the foot of my bed, thirty minutes after I brought his child into the world, and called me a liar. He wanted to use science to humiliate me. Let him use science. Let him see what his precious truth feels like."

Seeing that her pleas were falling on deaf ears, Carol’s demeanor shifted. The desperate mother vanished, replaced by the vindictive socialite I knew all too well. She stood up, wiping her face, her eyes narrowing into slits.

"You think you're so smart, Elena," she hissed. "But if Mark falls, he will drag you down with him. He will tie you up in court for years. He will claim you're unfit. He will make your life a living hell."

"He can try," I said calmly. "Rachel!"

The door opened instantly, and Rachel stepped into the room, her eyes darting between Carol’s furious expression and my calm composure.

"Please escort Mrs. Sterling out," I told my lawyer. "And tell the hospital security that neither she nor Mark are allowed back on this floor without my explicit permission."

"With pleasure," Rachel said, stepping aside and gesturing toward the exit. "This way, Carol."

Carol glared at me one last time before storming out, her heels clicking aggressively against the floor. Once she was gone, I looked down at Lily. Her tiny eyes fluttered open, revealing deep, dark pools that looked so much like mine.

"It's just you and me, sweet girl," I whispered, kissing her soft forehead. "But I promise you, we are more than enough."

Two hours later, a lab technician arrived with a court-ordered paternity testing kit, authorized by Mark’s legal counsel. I didn't fight it. I smiled at the technician, signed the consent forms, and allowed them to take a swab from the inside of Lily's cheek. The clock was ticking, and the fuse had already been lit.
