Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

By the next afternoon, the atmosphere in my private postpartum suite had shifted from a battleground to a legal war room. Rachel Bennett arrived wearing a tailored charcoal suit, her briefcase bursting with documents. She looked at Lily with warm, maternal eyes before turning her sharp, analytical gaze to me.

"Are you entirely certain about this, Elena?" Rachel asked gently, sitting in the armchair beside my bed. "In Tennessee, a divorce initiated immediately after childbirth can be legally complicated, especially regarding temporary custody and support. But given his declaration in front of hospital staff, we have a strong leverage point regarding emotional distress."

"I have never been more certain of anything in my life," I said, holding a bottle to Lily's lips. "Mark didn't just insult me; he abandoned his daughter the moment she drew her first breath. I want full custody. I want our assets divided exactly as our prenuptial agreement dictates."

"The prenup is ironclad," Rachel agreed, tapping her pen against her tablet. "It protects your business completely. But what about the Sterling family wealth? His father, Richard, is a powerful man. He won't let his son get dragged through a public divorce without a fight."

As if summoned by the mention of her family name, the door opened slowly, and Carol stepped inside. She looked twenty years older than she had the previous day. Her perfectly coiffed hair was unraveled, and her eyes were bloodshot.

"Rachel, could you give us a moment?" Carol asked, her voice cracking. "Please. I need to speak with Elena alone. It's a matter of absolute urgency."

I nodded to Rachel, who gave my hand a supportive squeeze before stepping out into the hallway, promising to remain within arm's reach.

Once the door closed, Carol sank into the chair Rachel had just vacated. She buried her face in her hands and began to weep silently. I watched her, unmoved. This was the woman who had spent the last four years subtle-shaming me for my middle-class background, reminding me constantly of the grand Sterling lineage my daughter would inherit.

"If you're here to beg me to take Mark back, save your breath," I told her.

"I'm not here for Mark's sake," Carol whispered, dropping her hands to reveal a face twisted by decades of fear. "I'm here for mine. Elena... you must stop the DNA test. You have to convince Mark to drop it. Tell him you'll forgive him, tell him whatever he needs to hear."

I let out a harsh, dry laugh. "Why would I do that? I know who my daughter's father is. When the results come back positive, Mark will look like a fool, and I will have all the leverage I need in court."

"That's just it," Carol said, leaning forward, her voice dropping to a frantic, terrified whisper. "The results won't just prove Lily is his. Mark is planning a comprehensive genetic lineage panel. He wants to prove she shares no DNA with you or anyone else he suspects. He’s comparing her markers directly to his own profile, which is linked to a private family health archive Richard set up years ago."

"And?" I frowned, failing to see the issue. "They'll match."

"They will match Mark," Carol gasped, a sob choking her throat. "But they won't match Richard."

The room grew icy cold. I stared at my mother-in-law, the pieces of a puzzle I hadn't even known existed suddenly clicking into place.

"What are you saying, Carol?"

Carol closed her eyes, fresh tears spilling down her wrinkled cheeks. "Thirty-two years ago, Richard and I were desperate for a child. Richard was... he was diagnosed with a severe fertility issue, but his pride was too immense to ever accept it. He blamed me. He threatened to divorce me and leave me penniless. Out of sheer terror, I had a brief affair with a man I barely knew, a traveling consultant. I got pregnant with Mark. Richard thinks Mark is his biological son. He built his entire empire, his entire legacy, for Mark."

She reached out, trying to grab my hand, but I pulled away in horror.

"If Mark forces this DNA test through the Sterling family archive," Carol cried, "the system will flag the genetic incompatibility between Mark and Richard. Richard will find out Mark isn't his son. He will disown him. He will divorce me. We will lose everything, Elena. Everything."
