Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

Jonathan remained on the porch as the sun began to dip below the tree line, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and violet. I opened the manila folder on the table, flipping through the encrypted printouts and digital decryption keys recovered from Cheyenne’s safe.
The documents confirmed my worst suspicion: Cheyenne Higgins hadn't just been a corrupt local tyrant; she had been a regional hub for a global shadow syndicate known as the Vanguard Group—a consortium of corporate espionage agents, arms dealers, and financial criminals who had spent years trying to track down my former operative identity.
When I disappeared ten years ago, I had locked away millions of dollars in dormant intelligence accounts across the globe, funds that the Vanguard Group desperately wanted to recover to finance their operations. They had used the Higgins family as local muscle and informants, waiting for the day my cover would slip.
“They know you're here, Sutton,” Jonathan said, watching my expression. “The moment your financial algorithms triggered the lockdown on the Higgins commercial accounts, it pinged their global monitoring servers. They know Shadow is active again.”
“Let them come,” I said calmly, closing the folder with a soft thud. “I left that life behind to protect my daughter. If they want to bring their war to my doorstep, I’ll finish it once and for all.”
Jonathan let out a low whistle, shaking his head. “You haven't lost your edge, have you? What's your play?”
“We don't wait for them to make a move in the shadows,” I replied, standing up and dusting off my hands. “We draw them out into the light, where their money and secrecy can't protect them.”
Just then, the screen door of the farmhouse squeaked open, and Anna stepped out onto the porch, holding a freshly baked plate of chocolate chip cookies she had made with the help of a kind neighbor down the road.
“Daddy, Mr. Jonathan, come inside before they get cold!” Anna called out, her face glowing with happiness, completely innocent of the brewing storm surrounding our lives.

Jonathan looked at Anna, then back at me, a rare expression of deep respect softening his sharp features. “You’ve got a lot to protect, old friend. Count me in. What do you need?”
“Everything we've got,” I said quietly. “Let's remind the Vanguard Group why my name was whispered in the dark.”
