Chapter 1 - The Call in the Dark

For ten years, I had lived as a ghost.
The world knew me as Sutton, a quiet businessman who kept to himself and avoided attention. Nobody knew that before I disappeared, I had been Shadow—the name whispered through the underground world by people who feared crossing my path.
I had walked away from that life because of my daughter, Anna.
She was the one person who made me want a different future.
That future ended at 2:17 a.m. when my phone rang.
I was sitting alone in my office outside Atlanta when I saw the hospital number appear on the screen.
“Dad…”
My daughter’s voice was barely audible.
“I’m at the hospital.”
Every instinct I had came alive.
“What happened, sweetheart?”
There was a long silence before she whispered the words that changed everything.
“Uncle Luke and Uncle Reid came to the house. They got angry. Mom closed the curtain while they hurt me.”
I didn’t raise my voice.
I didn’t break anything.
After years in a world where emotions could get people killed, I knew one thing: anger without control was useless.
I asked Anna to breathe and tell me everything.
Her mother’s brothers, Luke and Reid Higgins, had arrived at the family home in Blackwood Ridge. The Higgins family controlled nearly everything in that town—the businesses, the properties, and the people who were too afraid to challenge them.
A small accident had started it.
Anna spilled a drink near Luke’s expensive shoes.
Instead of letting it go, they decided to teach a child a lesson.
And Anna’s own mother, Dahlia, had watched from the window.
She closed the curtain.
Twelve hours later, I walked into the hospital.
The doctor gave me the truth.
Anna would recover, but the fear they left behind would take much longer to heal.
I sat beside her bed and held her hand.
The Higgins family believed their influence made them untouchable.
They owned the local businesses. They had friends in government offices. They had people who protected their secrets.
They thought I was still the man they remembered.
They were wrong.
On the fourth day, Dahlia’s mother, Cheyenne Higgins, called me.
“Well, look who finally came back,” she said with a laugh. “You should understand something, Sutton. My family runs this town.”
I stayed silent.
She continued.
“My sons are protected. The police know us. The courts know us. You should take your daughter and be thankful we are allowing it.”
Then she made one mistake.
She revealed what Luke planned to do if I came after him.
Cheyenne had no idea the call was recording.
I saved every word.
But I didn’t rush to confront them.
I didn’t show up at their mansion.
I simply made one phone call.
Not as Sutton.
As Shadow.
That night, an encrypted message arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a video.
A sixteen-year-old girl named Paige had secretly recorded what happened inside the Higgins estate.
The footage showed Luke and Reid in the backyard.
It showed Anna.

And it showed Dahlia standing at the window before pulling the curtain closed.
For the first time in years, the Higgins family was about to discover the difference between having power and actually being untouchable.
