Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, Blackwood Ridge had transformed into a vibrant, thriving community. The corrupt officials were long gone, replaced by dedicated public servants who genuinely cared about the town's future. The old Higgins estate had been seized by the federal government and converted into a public community center and youth park—a lasting symbol of healing and renewal.

Inside our sunlit farmhouse, the morning sun poured through the kitchen windows, filling the room with warmth and life.

Anna sat at the wooden dining table, carefully coloring a picture in her sketchpad while humming a cheerful tune. Her wrist was fully healed, the physical and emotional scars of the past replaced by the carefree laughter of a happy nine-year-old girl.

I stood at the stove, flipping pancakes on the griddle, the rich smell of maple syrup and coffee filling the air.

The front door opened softly, and Jonathan stepped inside, holding a thick manila envelope stamped with official federal seals.

“Morning, Sutton,” Jonathan said with a warm smile, tossing the envelope onto the counter. “Just got the final clearance cables from Washington. The Vanguard Group has officially dissolved its regional cell. Your old file is sealed, locked, and buried forever. You're completely off the grid, permanently.”

I picked up the envelope, tossed it directly into the recycling bin without a second glance, and smiled back at him. “Good. I don't need files anymore.”

Jonathan nodded, tipping his imaginary hat. “I’m heading out. Take care of her, Shadow—or rather, Sutton.”

“Always,” I replied.

Jonathan waved goodbye and walked out the door, leaving the house in complete, peaceful tranquility.

I placed a stack of warm pancakes on a plate and set it down in front of Anna. She looked up, flashing me a radiant smile that made every sacrifice, every battle, and every shadow I had ever walked through entirely worth it.

“Thanks, Daddy!” she said happily, diving into her breakfast.

I sat down across from her, holding my coffee mug in my hands, looking out the window at the green meadows and the endless, beautiful horizon stretching out before us. The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest. Our future belonged to us.
