Chapter 7 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

With the Higgins syndicate dismantled and its leadership facing decades in federal prison, Blackwood Ridge faced the unprecedented task of rebuilding its civic institutions from scratch. An interim municipal council was hastily appointed by the state government, consisting of honest local business owners and retired public servants who had spent years silenced in the background.

The local bakery, the hardware store, and the diner on Main Street were no longer forced to pay heavy extortion fees to the Higgins family's shell companies. Prices stabilized, community morale skyrocketed, and for the first time in memory, local elections were scheduled without intimidation or pre-arranged outcomes.

As for me, I chose to remain in Blackwood Ridge—not as Shadow, and not as the quiet, invisible ghost of a man I had pretended to be, but simply as Sutton, a dedicated father helping his daughter heal.

We moved into a modest, sunlit farmhouse on the outskirts of town, far away from the oppressive iron gates of the Higgins estate. The house had a wide porch overlooking a sprawling green meadow where wild horses occasionally grazed.

One afternoon, while I was sitting on the porch repairing a wooden swing for Anna, a sleek black sedan pulled up the gravel driveway. A man in an immaculate tailored suit stepped out. It was Jonathan Thorne, my former handler from my days in international intelligence operations—a man who hadn't seen or spoken to me since I walked away from the underworld a decade ago.

Jonathan walked up the steps, adjusting his cuffs, and looked around the peaceful countryside with an amused smirk.

“You know, Shadow,” Jonathan said, leaning against the porch railing, “when you dropped off the grid ten years ago, I figured you were either dead or living on a remote beach in the Pacific. I never expected you to turn into a domestic suburban handyman.”

I didn't stop sanding the wooden slat of the swing. “People change, Jonathan. Some people realize that chasing ghosts is a waste of a life.”

“Maybe,” Jonathan said, pulling a thick manila folder from under his arm and placing it on the small coffee table beside my toolbox. “But ghosts have a funny way of leaving loose ends. The federal authorities who raided the Higgins estate found something hidden in Cheyenne Higgins’ personal wall safe. Something that concerns you directly.”

I paused my work, my eyes narrowing slightly as I looked at the folder. “What kind of something?”

“Documents relating to your real identity, your past assets, and a standing international bounty that was never officially closed out by your old rivals,” Jonathan said quietly, his tone turning serious. “Even though the Higgins family is behind bars, they weren't working alone. They were selling local Blackwood Ridge municipal data to an international syndicate—people who have been looking for 'Shadow' for over a decade.”

The peaceful afternoon breeze suddenly felt cold. The battle for Blackwood Ridge wasn't just a local dispute. It was the opening salvo of a much larger war.
