Chapter 3 - Awakening the Network

Blackwood Ridge police station sat on Main Street, a heavy brick building that looked more like a fortress than a civic office. Chief of Police Marcus Vance leaned back in his leather chair, a toothpick dangling from his mouth, listening lazily as I laid out the initial report.
“Look, Mr. Sutton, or whatever your name is,” Vance said, waving a hand dismissively. “Dahlia already came in and filed an incident report on behalf of the family. She said the girl fell off a garden wall while playing. Accidents happen. Case closed.”
“A nine-year-old child has a fractured wrist, a concussion, and boot-print bruises on her ribs from two grown men, and you’re calling it a playground accident?” I asked, leaning forward across his desk.
Vance narrowed his eyes, losing his bored facade. “Listen to me, mister. In Blackwood Ridge, the Higgins family writes the rules. Luke and Reid are pillars of this community. You want to press charges? Go ahead. Talk to every judge in the county. See who answers your phone calls. Now, get out of my station before I arrest you for disturbing the peace.”
I didn't argue. I didn't threaten him. I simply stood up, adjusted my coat, and walked out.
Vance thought he had won. He didn't know that my real work was happening invisibly.
Back in my rented motel room, I opened a secure, heavily encrypted laptop that I had kept hidden in the lining of my spare suitcase. The screen flickered to life, connecting to a decentralized satellite network that bypassed local telecom monitoring. I typed a single command line, unlocking a dormant channel that hadn’t been active in a decade.
Target acquired: Blackwood Ridge, Georgia. Primary nodes: The Higgins Syndicate (Luke, Reid, Cheyenne, Marcus Vance). Authorization: Shadow-One.
Within seconds, automated ping responses began flooding in from across the globe. Former intelligence operatives, financial forensic experts, and digital security specialists who owed their lives to "Shadow" woke up from their civilian lives.
The first asset to activate was Paige, the sixteen-year-old niece of a local mechanic who lived next door to the Higgins estate. Paige had been mowing her family's lawn when she saw the commotion in the Higgins backyard. Terrified by what she witnessed, she had used her phone to record the entire assault through a gap in the wooden fence.
When my encrypted message reached her phone, it unlocked automatically.
“Upload complete,” the interface read.

I watched the video file for the first time. The high-definition footage was damning, crystal clear, and completely undeniable. It showed Luke laughing as he shoved nine-year-old Anna to the ground, Reid kicking her toy aside, and Dahlia walking over to the window, pulling the heavy velvet curtains shut to block out the view of her own daughter being beaten.
The evidence was locked. The trap was set. All I needed to do now was let the Higgins family think they were entirely untouchable just a little bit longer.
