Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Six months later, the coastal house was no longer just a building—it was a home, breathing and alive with the chaotic, beautiful energy of a real family.

The backyard now featured a brand-new wooden swing set that Damian had spent an entire Saturday building himself, refusing to let the contractors touch it because "a father has to build his daughter's first swing." Lily had already adopted a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby, who spent most of his days chasing dragonflies near the garden.

And Elena?

Elena had finally picked up her digital drawing tablet again. For years, her creativity had been locked away behind survival instincts and diner menus. Now, surrounded by natural light streaming through the massive studio window of the new house, she was designing children's book illustrations—a long-held dream she had abandoned in her youth.

On a crisp Saturday afternoon, Damian walked into her studio holding two mugs of steaming coffee.

He stopped by the doorway, leaning his shoulder against the frame, just watching her work. The sun caught the dark strands of her hair, and a small, content smile played on her lips as she finalized the sketch of a little girl flying on the back of a magical sea turtle.

"You're staring," Elena said without looking up, though the smile on her face deepened.

"I have a right to stare," Damian replied, walking over and setting a mug down on her desk before wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder. "You're a masterpiece, Ashcroft. Or... Vale. I still need to get used to the paperwork."

Elena chuckled, turning slightly in his embrace to look up at him. "You had no trouble changing your company's foundation to match our new family values, Mr. Vale. Changing a last name should be easy for a tech billionaire."

"Everything is easy when you're around," Damian whispered, his voice dropping into that warm, intimate register that had first made her heart race in Boston.

He reached out, taking her hand and slipping a simple, elegant platinum band onto her ring finger—matching the one she had quietly agreed to wear during a small, private ceremony on the beach three weeks prior, with only Patty and a local judge in attendance.

"Speaking of easy," Damian continued, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Lily is at her piano lesson, the puppy is asleep, and we have the entire afternoon to ourselves."

Elena arched an eyebrow, turning fully in his arms and looping her arms around his neck. "Is that an executive order, Mr. Vale?"

"It's a husband's request," Damian murmured, leaning down. "And trust me... this is one boardroom you'll actually enjoy running."

He kissed her then—deeply, passionately, and without a single ounce of fear or hesitation.
