Chapter 5 - The Truth in the Rain

"Mom, why is he looking at us like that?" Lily whispered, her small hands clutching Elena’s jacket. "Do you know him?"
Elena swallowed hard, her throat burning. She looked down at her daughter, then up at Damian, who was still kneeling on the floor, wet and broken.
"Get up, Damian," Elena said, her voice dropping into a harsh, defensive whisper. "Get up and get out of here. You can't just walk back in here and act like—"
"I was looking for you," Damian interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. He didn't stand up. He remained on his knees, looking up at them as if they were holy. "You think I was angry? You think I wanted revenge? Elena... the day you left, I thought I had failed you. I thought my enemies had gotten to you. I spent three months tearing the city apart. When I found out you emptied your accounts and left the country, I searched every port, every small town, every state on the coast."
Elena stared at him, her skepticism flaring like a shield. "You were ruthless, Damian. I saw the things you did. I heard the way you talked on the phone. I was terrified of what you would turn into—what you would do to our child if you decided you owned us."
Damian flinched as if he had been slapped. The words hung in the air between them, heavy and sharp.
"Is that what you thought?" Damian whispered, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "You thought I would hurt you? You thought I would cage my own family?"
"You buried companies! You destroyed people without blinking an eye!"
"To protect what was mine!" Damian shouted softly, the pain in his voice cutting deeper than any anger. "My father lost everything because he was soft, Elena. I built that empire so no one could ever hurt us, so we would never have to be afraid again. But I built it so high... I built it so high that I locked you out. I didn't realize that my armor was suffocating the very person I was trying to protect."
He reached out slowly, stopping an inch away from Elena’s knee, not daring to touch without permission.
"I changed, Elena," he said, his voice breaking. "After you left, I walked away from the boardrooms. I handed the CEO position to my brother. I spent years looking for you, not to control you... but to ask for forgiveness. To tell you that I would burn the entire empire to the ground if it meant having you back."
Elena looked down at him. The man kneeling in front of her wasn't the arrogant titan she had fled from seven years ago. He was a man who had been hollowed out by grief, carrying the ghost of a love he thought was gone forever.
Lily peeked out from behind Elena’s shoulder, her big brown eyes studying Damian with childlike curiosity.
"Are you my dad?" Lily asked softly.
The question hung in the diner like a falling star.
Damian’s breath caught. He looked up at the little girl, his face crumpling. He swallowed hard, nodding slowly.
"Yes, sweetheart," Damian whispered, a tear finally escaping and tracing a wet path down his cheek. "I am. I'm so sorry it took me so long to find you."
Lily looked at him for a long moment, then looked up at her mother. "Mom? Is he telling the truth?"
Elena felt the last remaining walls around her heart crack and crumble into dust. She looked at Damian—at the eyes that mirrored her daughter's, at the pain she had caused him, at the love that had survived seven years of silence and storm.

She let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension of a thousand sleepless nights finally draining out of her body.
"Yes, baby," Elena whispered, her own tears finally falling. "He's telling the truth."
