Chapter 6 - A New Dawn Over the Atlantic

The storm broke around midnight.

The heavy, bruised clouds that had smothered the coast for hours finally began to tear apart, rolling away toward the open ocean and leaving behind a vast, star-studded sky. The air smelled crisp, clean, and washed of all the old fear.

Inside the Tidal Spoon Diner, the atmosphere was entirely different.

The neon sign above the entrance had stopped flickering, thanks to one of Damian’s bodyguards who had quietly fixed the loose wiring outside with a pocket knife and a roll of electrical tape while waiting in the car.

Patty was behind the counter, pouring fresh coffee into mugs with a wide, beaming grin that she hadn't managed to wipe off her face for an hour.

"Well," Patty said, sliding a plate of warm lemon tarts across the counter. "I must say, El—sorry, Elena—you sure know how to pick 'em. A bit dramatic with the SUVs, but I approve."

Elena sat at a corner booth next to Damian. Lily sat between them, happily swinging her legs as she ate a slice of pie, chattering away about her school projects and her favorite books. Damian hung on every word she said, listening with an intensity and a joy that made Elena's chest ache in the best possible way.

"So," Damian said, turning his head to look at Elena, his hand sliding across the vinyl seat until his fingers brushed hers. "Does this mean I get to take you both home?"

Elena looked down at their joined hands. The calluses from years of diner work rested against the expensive, smooth skin of a man who owned the world, yet looked like he had just won the only prize that mattered.

"Not home, Damian," Elena said with a faint, genuine smile. "We build a new one. Together."

Damian smiled back, the old laugh lines around his eyes finally returning, deep and warm.

"Wherever you want, Elena," he whispered, lifting her hand and pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her knuckles. "As long as I'm with you."

Outside, the Atlantic rolled peacefully against the shore, the waves whispering a quiet promise of a future that was finally, truly safe.
