Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Tomorrow

The journey back to Boston was nothing like the frantic, terror-fueled escape Elena had made seven years ago.
There were no racing heartbeats, no looking over her shoulder at every traffic light, no gripping a burner phone with trembling fingers. Instead, they rode in the spacious backseat of the lead SUV, with Lily curled up between them, fast asleep with her head resting comfortably on Damian’s shoulder.
As the familiar city skyline began to rise against the northern horizon, Elena felt a brief flutter of anxiety in her chest.
Damian noticed instantly. He shifted his arm, pulling her closer so her head rested against his shoulder, right above Lily.
"We're not going back to the penthouse," Damian said quietly, reading her thoughts with the effortless ease of a man who knew her soul.
Elena looked up at him, surprised. "Where are we going?"
"A house," Damian said, looking down at Lily with a gentle expression. "With a big backyard. Near the coast, but far enough from the city center that we can actually breathe. No boardrooms attached, no high-rise security cameras watching the lobby. Just a home. I bought it six months ago, hoping... praying that one day I'd have someone to fill it with."
Tears pricked the corners of Elena’s eyes. She reached across Lily and squeezed Damian’s hand.
"You planned this?"
"I hoped," he corrected softly. "And hope is a powerful thing when you have the right motivation."
When the car finally pulled up to the property, Elena held her breath. It wasn't a cold, monolithic glass tower. It was a sprawling, beautiful Cape Cod-style house painted a warm coastal gray, surrounded by tall oak trees and a wide porch that looked out over a quiet, private inlet of the sea.
Lily woke up just as the car stopped, rubbing her eyes sleepily. She pushed open the door and hopped out onto the gravel driveway, gasping as she looked up at the house.
"Is this where we live now?" Lily asked, her eyes wide with wonder. "Is there room for a dog?"
"As many dogs as you want, princess," Damian said, stepping out after her and swinging her up into the air with a laugh that sounded entirely free, like a man shedding a twenty-year burden.
Elena stepped out of the vehicle, the sea breeze catching her hair. She stood on the edge of the driveway, watching the man she had loved, lost, and found again spin their daughter around in circles on the lawn.

The sun was high and bright, casting a warm golden glow over the entire scene.
There were no shadows left. Only the open road ahead, and the quiet, unbreakable promise of tomorrow.
