Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Chose

Five years flew by like a gentle breeze off the Atlantic.
The Tidal Spoon Diner was still standing in the small coastal town, now proudly run by Patty, who frequently bragged to every customer who walked through the door about her "famous former waitress" who had married a billionaire and now lived in a fairytale house by the sea.
Every summer, the family of three—sometimes four, as a new baby boy with the same dark eyes and quiet resilience had recently joined their clan—would drive down to the diner for weekend pancakes.
On one such sunny afternoon, Elena sat at the exact same corner booth where it had all begun.
The neon sign above the entrance hummed steadily, glowing in a bright, unbroken red. There was no flicker. No stutter. Just steady light, guiding people home.
Lily, now twelve and fiercely independent, was helping Patty wipe down a table, while Damian sat beside Elena, holding their youngest son, Leo, on his lap. Leo was reaching out with chubby little fingers to tug at Damian’s tie, giggling uncontrollably.
Damian caught Elena looking at him, and a slow, familiar smile spread across his face.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked softly, shifting Leo so he could wrap his free arm around her shoulders.
Elena leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring rhythm of his heart. She looked out the diner window, watching the blue waves crash against the distant shore, sparkling brightly in the afternoon sun.
"I was just thinking about the storm," Elena whispered, a quiet smile touching her lips. "The night you walked through that door."
Damian tightened his arm around her, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head.

"Best storm of my life," he murmured. "It brought me home."
Elena closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of pine, coffee, and familiar love. The past was behind them, the present was a gift, and the horizon ahead was wide, beautiful, and entirely their own.
