Chapter 8 - The Scales of Justice

Six months later, the Cuyahoga County Courthouse loomed large under a bright autumn sun. Inside Courtroom 402, the trial of Ethan Thompson had reached its final phase. Due to the overwhelming forensic evidence, digital tracking logs, medical confirmation, and his own recorded confession during the police interrogation, Ethan’s defense attorney had been forced to advise a change of plea to guilty on multiple counts of aggravated statutory rape, incest, and coercion, in hopes of securing a slightly reduced sentence.
Ethan stood before Judge Harrison, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, his head bowed, looking a far cry from the arrogant college pre-med student he had once projected himself to be.
Judge Harrison looked down from the high oak bench, his expression stern and unyielding. “Mr. Thompson, the crimes you committed were an egregious betrayal of trust, exploiting a vulnerable minor within the very sanctuary of your own home. You inflicted deep, compounding trauma upon a thirteen-year-old child who trusted you as an older family member.”
Ethan muttered a quiet, lifeless, “I’m sorry, Your Honor.”
“Your apologies carry no weight here, Mr. Thompson,” Judge Harrison stated firmly. “Considering the severity of the charges, the abuse of position, and the permanent impact on the victim, this court sentences you to twenty-five years to life in a maximum-security state correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first twenty years.”
