Chapter 2 - Sirens in the Night

The wail of the police cruisers cut through the quiet Cleveland night, echoing off the damp asphalt outside St. Mary’s Hospital. Inside the examination room, the sterile white lights felt blinding. Dr. Emily Carter maintained a protective stance beside Lily’s bed, her hand resting reassuringly on the teenager's cold, trembling shoulder.

Moments later, the heavy door pushed open. Officer Marcus Vance, a veteran detective with the Cleveland Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, stepped inside. His expression was professional, carefully drained of shock, but his eyes conveyed immediate gravity. He flashed his badge, clipped his notebook, and spoke in a low, measured tone designed not to startle the young girl further.

“Dr. Carter? I’m Detective Vance. I received your emergency call,” Marcus said, glancing down at Lily, who shrank back against the pillows.

“Thank you for coming so fast, Detective,” Emily replied, stepping slightly back to give the officer room while remaining close enough to support Lily. “This is Lily Thompson. She’s thirteen. We’ve confirmed a sixteen-week pregnancy resulting from abuse by an adult household member.”

Detective Vance nodded slowly, pulling a chair closer to the bed. He didn't tower over her; instead, he sat down, putting himself at her eye level. “Lily. I know you’re scared right now, and I know everything feels upside down. But you are the brave one here. You made it to the hospital, and you told the doctor. That took a lot of strength.”

Lily sniffled, wiping her tear-stained cheeks with the sleeve of her oversized sweatshirt. “He… he said nobody would believe me. He said my mom would take his side because he’s in college and has a future.”

“We are going to make sure the truth comes out, Lily,” Marcus promised, flipping open his notepad. “Can you tell me where Ethan is right now?”

“At home… with my mom and my stepdad,” Lily whispered.

Detective Vance’s jaw tightened. He pulled out his radio, muttering brief instructions to his backup unit already stationed outside the hospital. “Dispatch, I need a unit dispatched immediately to the Thompson residence on Maplewood Avenue. Suspect is Ethan Thompson, nineteen. Prioritize apprehension and secure the premises.”

Turning back to Lily, Marcus continued gently, “A female crisis advocate and a specialized medical team are on their way to help you through the next steps, Lily. You aren’t alone anymore. The nightmare is starting to unravel.”

Outside, the red and blue flashing lights cast shifting geometric patterns across the hospital walls, signaling the beginning of justice.
