Chapter 5 - Inside the Interrogation Room

At the downtown Cleveland Police precinct, the harsh fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a sterile glow across the metal table in Interrogation Room B. Ethan Thompson sat handcuffed to the bolt in the center of the table, his knees bouncing nervously. He had spent the last hour demanding a lawyer, shouting that his rights were violated, but as the door clicked open and Detective Vance walked in carrying a thick manila folder, the bravado drained out of him.
Marcus Vance sat down slowly, tossing the folder onto the metal table with a dull thud. He didn't smile; he didn't raise his voice. He simply stared at the nineteen-year-old college student with cold, unwavering professionalism.
“You have a phone call coming, Ethan. Your counsel has been notified,” Marcus began, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. “Before that happens, I want you to look at something.”
Marcus opened the folder and slid several printed medical documents and forensic interview transcripts across the table. “This is a full medical report from St. Mary’s Hospital. This is your step-sister’s statement, corroborated by physical evidence, digital communications retrieved from your backup cloud storage, and timelines that you thought you deleted.”
Ethan swallowed hard, his throat dry. “I… I don't know what you’re talking about. Those messages are forged. She’s lying. She’s a manipulative kid who wanted to get me in trouble.”
“Manipulative?” Marcus repeated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a sharp edge of disgust. “Ethan, she is thirteen years old. You are nineteen. You used your position as an older household member, your intimidation tactics, and threats of destroying her family to coerce a child.”
“Prove it!” Ethan snapped, his voice cracking. “It was consensual! She knew what she was—!”
The moment the words left his mouth, the color drained from Ethan’s face. He froze, his eyes widening in sheer panic as he realized what he had just admitted in front of a recording device and two sworn police officers.
May you like
Detective Vance smiled grimly, tapping the recording box in the center of the table. “Let’s roll that back for the court transcript, shall we? You just admitted on tape that you engaged in sexual activity with a thirteen-year-old minor, while attempting to invalidate her age by claiming consent—which legally does not exist at her age, even if it weren't statutory rape and incest.”
Ethan slumped forward, burying his face in his cuffed hands as the full, inescapable reality of his prison sentence began to close in around him.
