Chapter 4 - The Mother’s Awakening

Back at St. Mary’s Hospital, the heavy swinging doors pushed open once more, admitting a frantic Sarah Thompson, still half-dressed in her bathrobe under a heavy winter coat, accompanied by a grim-faced Richard. Sarah rushed toward the nurse's desk, her breathing ragged.
“My daughter! I need to see my daughter! Lily Thompson! Where is she?” Sarah demanded, tears streaming down her face.
A nurse looked up calmly, signaling for security to keep a respectful distance. “Mrs. Thompson? Dr. Carter is with her now. Right this way.”
When Sarah burst into the examination room, she found Lily sitting up in bed, wrapped in a warm blanket, talking quietly with a social worker named Elena. Upon seeing her mother, Lily flinched, pulling the blanket tighter around her chin, her eyes filling with fresh terror.
“Lily! Oh, my baby!” Sarah cried, rushing forward to embrace her. But as she reached for her daughter, Lily shrank away, sobbing, “Don’t touch me… you didn't believe me… you never believe me.”
Sarah froze, her hands hovering in the air. “What? What are you talking about, sweetie? The police… they took Ethan away. They said horrific things—what is going on here?”
Dr. Emily Carter stepped between Sarah and the bed, her expression firm and uncompromising. “Mrs. Thompson, you need to sit down and listen to me very carefully. Lily is pregnant. She is thirteen years old. And the father is Ethan.”
The words hung in the sterile air like falling glass. Sarah staggered backward, colliding with the small medical tray. “No… no, that’s a lie. Ethan is a college student. He’s a gentleman. Lily… Lily must have misunderstood something, or she’s making up stories for attention—she’s always been so dramatic—”
“Stop it, Sarah!” Richard snapped, his own face pale as paper. He looked at his wife in horror. “Didn’t you see the look on the detectives’ faces? Didn’t you hear what they said when they took him? He didn't even fight them the way an innocent person would. He panicked.”
“You’re blaming my son?” Sarah shrieked, the maternal instinct twisting into denial. “Your son!” Richard corrected sharply. “Or did you forget whose side of the family he came from? Wake up, Sarah! While you were busy praising his grades and treating him like a golden god, he was destroying our family under our own roof!”

Lily buried her face in her hands, her body wracked with sobs. Elena, the social worker, immediately placed a comforting arm around the teenager, glaring up at Sarah. “Mrs. Thompson, right now, your daughter needs unconditional support, protection, and belief. If you cannot provide a safe emotional space for her, I will have the state place her in emergency protective custody immediately.”
Sarah looked between the clinical detachment of the doctor, the fierce anger of her husband, and the broken, terrified form of her thirteen-year-old daughter. The denial slowly crumbled, replaced by a crushing wave of guilt, horror, and profound remorse. She dropped to her knees beside the bed, weeping uncontrollably. “I’m sorry… oh god, Lily, I’m so, so sorry…”
