Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at Maplewood Avenue

Maplewood Avenue was usually a peaceful, tree-lined suburban street where residents kept their lawns pristine and doors unlocked. Tonight, however, the silence was shattered as three unmarked police cruisers and a patrol car rolled up to the two-story colonial home belonging to the Thompson family.
Officers moved with practiced stealth, surrounding the perimeter while Detective Sergeant Ryan Cole knocked firmly on the front door. The heavy oak door swung open a minute later. Richard Thompson, fifty-four, stood in the doorway wearing a bathrobe, looking disheveled and deeply irritated.
“What in the world is going on? Do you know what time it is?” Richard demanded, his voice booming in the quiet night. Behind him, Sarah Thompson—Lily’s mother—appeared in the hallway, clutching a floral robe tightly around herself, her face etched with confusion and sleep.
“Mr. and Mrs. Thompson? I’m Detective Cole with the Cleveland Police Department. We need to step inside,” Sergeant Cole said, displaying his credentials as he and two other officers stepped past Richard into the foyer.
“Step inside? You can’t just barge into—Sarah, wake up, what is this?” Richard sputtered, blocking their path.
Sarah stepped forward, her eyes wide with anxiety. “Officers, what’s happened? Is it an accident? Is it Lily? She went to stay at her friend’s house for a sleepover, didn’t she?”
“No, Mrs. Thompson, Lily is currently at St. Mary’s Hospital,” Detective Cole stated bluntly, watching their reactions closely. “And we are here for Ethan.”
At the mention of his stepson's name, Richard scoffed. “Ethan? What does Ethan have to do with any of this? He’s upstairs in his room studying for his midterms. He’s a pre-med student at the university, for crying out loud!”
“Where is he?” Cole pressed, ignoring the defensive bluster.
Before Richard could argue further, footsteps echoed down the staircase. Ethan Thompson appeared on the landing, wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt, rubbing his eyes. “Dad? What’s going on? Who’s at the door?”
As Ethan’s eyes adjusted to the hallway lights and he locked eyes with the uniformed officers, the color drained entirely from his face. His carefully constructed facade of innocence began to crack in real-time.
“Ethan Thompson?” Detective Cole asked, stepping toward the stairs. “You need to come with us.”
“On what grounds? This is ridiculous!” Ethan stammered, his voice rising pitch by pitch, betraying sheer panic. “You can’t just arrest me!”
“You’re being detained for the statutory rape and aggravated sexual abuse of a minor,” Cole declared, snapping the steel cuffs onto Ethan’s wrists before he could make a move toward the back hallway.

Sarah shrieked, clutching her chest. “Rape? A minor? No! That’s impossible! Lily is our daughter—Ethan is a good boy! You’re making a horrible mistake!”
As Ethan was dragged out the front door, shouting protests and denials into the cool night air, the foundation of the Thompson household shattered completely.
