Chapter 9 - A New Architecture

Later that afternoon, while Lily rested upstairs, Daniel and Amelia sat on the back patio with coffee.

"The board approved the structural revision to the employee welfare program yesterday," Amelia said, leaning against the wooden railing. "We've created a direct medical advocacy pipeline. No tenure requirements, no multi-level managerial sign-offs for crisis funds. If an employee's immediate family faces a catastrophic health event, the company steps in automatically."

Daniel looked at her, genuinely moved. "You didn't have to change corporate policy for this."

"Yes, I did," Amelia said firmly. "A company that relies on its people to build its future ought to protect those people when their present is falling apart. I failed to see what you were carrying, Daniel. That won't happen again to anyone else at Granton."

She pulled a folder from her briefcase and set it on the table between them.

"This is your official reinstatement package," she said. "Senior Director of Infrastructure Systems. Remote flexibility, flexible hours, and an absolute ban on taking work home past 5:00 PM."

Daniel looked down at the contract, then back at Amelia. "And if I need to leave at 5:02?"

Amelia smiled faintly. "Then I'll hold the elevator for you."
