Chapter 4 - The Truth Uncovered

Amelia sat on the front porch steps with Sarah while eight-year-old Lily watched a cartoon inside the living room through the screen door.
Sarah explained everything: Rachel’s sudden death three years prior, Daniel’s quiet routine to preserve normalcy for Lily, the recent diagnosis of the vascular abnormality, and the crushing financial barrier imposed by the specialized hospital in Boston.
"The deposit was two hundred thousand dollars," Sarah said, her voice tight. "The insurance company dragged their feet, calling the micro-surgical technique 'elective' because standard surgery carried a forty percent risk of permanent neurological damage. Daniel found a contract that paid the advance upfront. But it required him to start immediately in Europe for an industrial systems overhaul. He couldn't give you two weeks. He couldn't negotiate. He just needed the money before Lily’s window closed."
Amelia felt a cold knot form in her chest. She remembered Daniel’s quiet diligence, his refusal to stay late for social events, and his absolute precision at work. She had assumed he was private; she had never realized he was carrying an unbearable burden alone.
"Granton Systems has a supplementary emergency health coverage trust," Amelia said, standing up. "It’s designed specifically for rare catastrophic conditions suffered by immediate family members of core staff."

Sarah shook her head softly. "Daniel looked into the corporate policy two years ago. Core staff coverage requires tenured executive sign-off, and he was two levels below the approval threshold. He assumed asking for an exception would take weeks of review board meetings he didn't have."
Amelia pulled out her phone. "He assumed wrong."
