Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Trail

In her office on the twenty-third floor, Amelia Grant could not drop the matter. Daniel’s sudden departure was completely out of character. As CEO, she was used to corporate maneuvers, but Daniel wasn't a corporate player; he was the technical backbone of their infrastructure.

She called Human Resources.

"Did Daniel file any grievances?" Amelia asked HR Director Marcus Vance.

"None," Marcus replied, scanning his screen. "No exit interview requests, no claims, no pension withdrawals. He simply forfeited his remaining PTO and walked out. Technically, he breached his contract by omitting notice, which forfeits his severance."

Amelia leaned back in her chair, staring out at the rain slicking the window. She pulled up Daniel’s personnel file. Under emergency contacts, there was only one name listed besides his deceased wife: an address in Oak Ridge, Ohio, and a phone number for a local pediatrician’s office marked in bold red ink.

That afternoon, Amelia drove to Oak Ridge.

The neighborhood was quiet, lined with modest two-story homes and damp autumn leaves covering the pavement. She parked across from Daniel’s address. The house was modest, with a blue bicycle resting against the porch railings.

As she stepped out of her car, she saw a woman loading small suitcases into the trunk of a sedan parked in the driveway. It was Daniel’s sister, Sarah.

Amelia approached slowly. "Excuse me. I'm looking for Daniel Carter. I'm his... former employer."

Sarah paused, holding a child's backpack. She looked at Amelia with a mix of exhaustion and suspicion. "If you're here about company property or non-compete forms, you're wasting your time. Daniel isn't here."

"I'm not here about company property," Amelia said quietly. "He left without a word. I need to know if he is alright."

Sarah stared at her for a long moment, assessing the corporate attire and the genuine concern in Amelia's voice. She let out a heavy breath. "He’s on a flight to Chicago right now. And then to Geneva. He took a contract job to pay for his daughter's brain surgery."
