Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

Six months later, the summer air over Lakewood Park was warm and clear.
The trees rustled softly in the breeze coming off the lake. Children were running across the grass toward the playground, their laughter carrying across the open field.
Daniel sat on a wooden bench near the shoreline, watching Lily run through the grass. Her hair had grown back completely, hiding any trace of the surgical scar. She was chasing a red kite, holding the string tight in her small hands as it caught the wind and climbed into the blue sky.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. Behind his driver’s license was the old photograph of Lily at six years old.
He looked from the picture to the girl running across the lawn today—healthy, strong, and bright.
He felt a light tap on his shoulder. Amelia was standing behind the bench, wearing casual clothes instead of her usual corporate suits, holding two ice cream cones.
"She’s fast," Amelia noted, handing him a cone and sitting beside him on the bench.
"She gets that from her mother," Daniel said, a soft, genuine smile touching his face.

Out on the field, Lily stopped, looked back at her father, and waved both arms toward the sky, holding the kite string steady against the summer wind.
Daniel waved back, holding the quiet certainty in his heart that everything he had fought for, and everything he had been willing to lose, had finally brought them home.
