Chapter 6 - Confrontation in Boston

Two hours later, Daniel walked into the private waiting area of the Boston Neurological Institute. Amelia Grant was standing by the window, holding two paper cups of coffee.

Daniel stopped a few paces away. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes deeper than before, but the desperate tension in his shoulders had cracked.

"Why?" Daniel asked, his voice rough. "You didn't owe me this. I walked out on the company. I breached contract."

Amelia walked over and offered him one of the coffee cups. "You walked out because you thought you were out of options, Daniel. You spent seven years making sure this company’s infrastructure never failed, yet you didn't trust the system to hold you up when your own life was falling apart."

"I couldn't risk corporate delays," Daniel said softly, looking down at his hands. "When it comes to Lily, I can't take a ten percent risk. I can't take a one percent risk."

"I know," Amelia said gently. "Which is why I bypassed the board. The emergency trust isn't a favor, Daniel. It’s what should have been offered to you the moment your daughter was diagnosed. The contract firm in Chicago has been notified that their non-compete demands were predatory, and our legal team resolved the escrow transfer. You don't owe them anything."

A door opened at the end of the hallway. Dr. Monroe walked out, carrying a chart, accompanied by a pediatric preparation nurse.

"Mr. Carter?" Dr. Monroe said. "Lily is prepped for her final pre-op scans. She asked if her dad was here yet to read the next chapter of her book."

Daniel looked at Amelia. For the first time in three years, the corporate wall between them vanished completely.

"Go," Amelia said softly. "I'll be in the waiting room."
