Chapter 7 - A Change of Heart

Summer bloomed across the estate, bringing warm weather and long, sunlit evenings. The incident with Victoria's legal team had been the final gasp of her vendetta; facing criminal charges for false reporting, she and her family had quietly withdrawn from the city's social scene.

With the threat gone, the atmosphere at the Hawthorne home became lighter than it had ever been.

Richard took the boys camping in the massive backyard, building a makeshift tent with Emily’s help. They roasted marshmallows, told silly ghost stories, and stared up at the stars.

"Miss Emily, look! A shooting star!" Ethan pointed toward the night sky, sitting on Richard's lap inside the open tent.

"Make a wish, Ethan," Emily said softly from her spot on a folding chair nearby.

"I wish Miss Emily stays with us forever and ever!" Ethan shouted happily.

Noah and Liam immediately chimed in. "Me too! Forever!"

Richard looked over at Emily, the firelight dancing in his eyes. "That sounds like a very good wish," he said quietly, his voice filled with emotion.

Emily smiled, her heart fluttering in a way she couldn't suppress.

Later that night, after the three boys had fallen fast asleep inside their sleeping bags, Richard and Emily sat together by the dying embers of the campfire.

"They really mean it, you know," Richard said, breaking the quiet space between them. "And so do I."

"Richard..." Emily began, unsure of what to say.

"Emily, when I threw you out that day, I was a blind, arrogant fool," Richard said, turning to face her completely. "I thought money and status were the only things that mattered. But watching you with my sons over these past few months... seeing how much light and life you brought back into this dark house... I realized how wrong I was about everything."

He reached out, gently taking her hand. Emily didn't pull away.

"You gave my children their childhood back," Richard continued, his voice trembling slightly. "And you gave me a second chance at being a real father. But more than that... I've fallen in love with you, Emily. Not because of what you do for us, but because of who you are. Your grace, your strength, your kindness."

Emily felt tears gathering in her eyes. "Richard... I love the boys with all my heart. And... I've fallen in love with you, too. But are you sure? The world you live in—the press, your business partners—they'll talk. They'll say I'm just the housekeeper who—"

"Let them talk," Richard interrupted fiercely, stepping closer and placing his hands softly on her cheeks. "I spent too long caring about what society thought, and it almost destroyed my family. You are the finest, most incredible woman I have ever known. I don't care about the press. I care about us."

He leaned in slowly, giving her time to pull back. But Emily didn't move. When his lips met hers, it was gentle, warm, and filled with a deep, profound truth that erased every doubt she had ever carried.

When they parted, Richard smiled, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "No more uniforms, Emily. No more cleaning gloves. From now on, you're by my side."
