Chapter 2 - The Shocking Truth

"Miss Emily! Don't leave! Miss Victoria tried to lock us in the glass greenhouse and burn our drawings!" Ethan sobbed, throwing his small arms around Emily's knees.

Noah and Liam clung to her legs, trembling violently. The blood on their arms wasn't theirs—it was red paint from the art supplies Victoria had violently knocked out of their hands when they tried to resist being locked inside the sunroom, mixed with superficial scratches from the shattered glass pane Ethan had broken to escape.

Richard skidded to a halt on the pavement, chest heaving, his face pale as ash. He stared at his sons, then at the bright red smeared across their clothes, and finally at Emily, who had instantly dropped her suitcase and dropped to her knees, pulling all three boys into a fierce hug.

"What... what are you talking about?" Richard gasped, reaching out toward Ethan. "Ethan, come here. Let Daddy look at you."

"NO!" Ethan screamed, flinching away and burying his face in Emily’s navy uniform. "You listened to the bad lady! She said she was going to send us away to a dark place where you'd forget us! She trapped us!"

Richard froze. His hand hovered in the air. The authority and unwavering arrogance that had defined him just twenty minutes prior shattered completely. He looked down at the boys' tear-stained faces, then at Emily, whose eyes were filled with defensive fire despite her own tears.

"Is this true?" Richard whispered, his voice trembling.

"I tried to tell you, Mr. Hawthorne," Emily said softly, her voice steady despite her trembling hands as she checked the boys for real injuries. "Victoria didn't find that watch in my bag. She put it there while I was packing the boys' lunch. I saw her reflection in the microwave door, but when I confronted her, she threatened to make sure I never worked again. I stayed quiet because I thought if I left quietly, she wouldn't take her frustration out on the children. I was wrong."

"She told us if we cried, she'd throw away Mommy's pictures!" Noah sobbed, clutching Emily's yellow-gloved hand. "She hid the watch in your tote bag when you were making juice!"

Richard felt as though the earth had opened up beneath him. The cold, logical brain that had built a multi-billion-dollar empire suddenly replayed the last hour with agonizing clarity: Victoria's overly dramatic discovery of the watch, her insistence on throwing Emily out immediately without checking security footage, and her unusual urgency to keep the boys upstairs.

Without a word, Richard pulled out his smartphone. His fingers shook as he accessed the mansion’s primary security database—the hidden backup server in his office that only he had access to, bypassing the main home control panel Victoria had been hovering around all morning.

He scrubbed back twenty-five minutes on the camera feed for the kitchen.

There it was. Clear as day in 4K resolution.

Victoria, holding a glass of sparkling water, slipping his diamond-encrusted Rolex into Emily’s canvas tote bag while Emily’s back was turned at the stove.

Richard’s phone almost slipped from his grip. A cold, dangerous fury began to replace the horror in his chest. He looked at Emily, kneeling in the dirt in her cleaning gloves, comforting his sons who refused to let go of her.

"Emily..." Richard's voice broke. "I... I don't know what to say."

"Don't say anything to me, Mr. Hawthorne," Emily replied coldly, wiping Noah's face with her sleeve. "Look after your children. They are terrified."

Before Richard could respond, the sound of heels clicking hurriedly on the asphalt echoed from the direction of the mansion gates. Victoria was hurrying down the driveway, her tailored designer outfit immaculate, her face twisted in a display of faux panic.

"Richard darling!" she called out, breathless. "Thank goodness you caught them! The boys went completely hysterical—they broke a glass vase in the conservatory and ran! We need to call security right now to take this woman away before she manipulates them any further!"

Richard turned around slowly. The look in his eyes made Victoria instantly stop in her tracks.
