Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

Over the next month, the Hawthorne mansion underwent a quiet revolution.

Richard kept his word. He stepped back from daily operations at Hawthorne Enterprises, delegating responsibility to his trusted COO. For the first time since the triplets were born, Richard was home for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

At first, the transition was awkward. The boys were cautious around their father, used to seeing him only as a distant figure who kissed their foreheads before leaving for early morning flights or black-tie galas. But Richard persisted. He let them paint in his pristine white study, he played soccer with them in the backyard, and he read them bedtime stories, even when his voice cracked with exhaustion.

Emily stayed on as the boys' primary caregiver and house manager, but the dynamic had shifted completely. She was no longer treated as hired help. Richard insisted she sit with the family for meals, and he consulted her on every decision regarding the boys' education and well-being.

One evening, after the triplets had finally fallen asleep, Richard found Emily sitting on the back patio, watching the sunset over the estate's sprawling gardens.

He walked out carrying two cups of warm tea and handed one to her.

"Thank you," Emily said, taking the mug and offering a small smile.

"They had a good day today," Richard said, taking a seat in the lounge chair beside her. "Liam scored his first goal in the yard. He told me he wanted to show you first."

"He's getting very fast," Emily chuckled softly. "They all are."

Richard was quiet for a moment, looking at his hands. "I never properly thanked you, Emily. Not just for stopping that day, but for everything you've done for them over the last three years. When Clara died... I froze. I thought if I built the biggest company in the world, I could protect them from anything. I didn't realize I was isolating them—and myself."

"Grief makes people do strange things, Mr. Hawthorne," Emily said gently. "You lost your wife. You were trying to survive."

"Please, call me Richard," he said, turning to look at her. "Mr. Hawthorne feels so distant. Especially after everything."

Emily looked at him. Away from the tailored suits and boardrooms, dressed in a simple sweater and jeans, Richard didn't look like a feared tech titan. He looked like a man who was slowly healing.

"Alright. Richard," she said softly.

"I spent years thinking I needed someone from my social circle to make this family complete again," Richard admitted, looking out at the gardens. "Someone like Victoria, who fit the image of what a billionaire's wife should be. I was so blind. I almost traded my children's happiness for appearances."

"You corrected your mistake when it mattered most," Emily pointed out. "That's what counts."

"Because of you," Richard said, his gaze fixed on her. "You showed me what real devotion looks like. You didn't take my money when I threw it at you, but you came back for my boys when they needed you. I've never met anyone like you, Emily."

May you like

Emily felt a faint warmth rise to her cheeks. She took a sip of her tea to hide her reaction. "I love those boys, Richard. I'd do anything for them."

"I know," Richard replied quietly. "And that's why I know I can never let you leave us again."
