Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Past

Just as life inside the Hawthorne household began to settle into a peaceful rhythm, a dark cloud gathered on the horizon.

Victoria Lane was not a woman who accepted defeat quietly. Humiliated by the broken engagement and furious that her family's firm had been unceremoniously dropped from several high-profile tech contracts, she sought revenge.

One rainy afternoon, while Richard was at a rare emergency board meeting in the city, a high-end luxury SUV pulled up to the estate gates. Security let the vehicle through, recognizing it as belonging to the Lane family's legal team.

Emily was in the kitchen preparing afternoon snacks for the triplets when the doorbell rang. When she opened the heavy oak front door, she was confronted not by Victoria, but by a slick-looking attorney holding a thick manila envelope, accompanied by a woman in a formal business suit from Child Protective Services.

"Can I help you?" Emily asked, instantly sensing danger.

"My name is Arthur Pendelton, representing Victoria Lane and the Lane Family Trust," the attorney announced grandly. "We are here to conduct an urgent welfare check on the Hawthorne children following a formal report filed regarding an unsafe living environment and the unauthorized employment of an unqualified caregiver."

Emily's heart dropped. "What are you talking about?"

"A report was filed claiming that Mr. Hawthorne has left his young children in the sole care of a woman with no official credentials, who was recently investigated for theft within the household," the CPS representative said, looking sternly at Emily. "We need to see the children immediately and inspect the premises."

"The theft allegation was completely fabricated, and Mr. Hawthorne is currently at work!" Emily said, her protective instincts flaring up. "The children are safe, healthy, and happy."

"That is for the court and the state to decide," Pendelton replied with a cold, smug smile. "If Mr. Hawthorne is absent and leaving his children with an unvetted domestic worker, we have grounds to request temporary emergency custody placement, given Miss Lane's former role as their prospective guardian."

"Over my dead body," a voice echoed behind them.

Richard walked through the front entrance, his raincoat dripping with water, his eyes burning with fury. He had been alerted by gate security the moment the car was cleared.

"Mr. Pendelton," Richard said, stepping between the attorney and Emily. "You have thirty seconds to state why you are trespassing on my property before I have my security team physically throw you off it."

"Mr. Hawthorne, we are acting on behalf of the state regarding a severe complaint—" the CPS worker began.

"I know exactly who you are acting on behalf of," Richard interrupted fiercely. "Victoria Lane is attempting to use state agencies to harass my family. Emily Carter is the legal, background-checked primary caregiver of my children, and her contract was officially updated and notarized two weeks ago. Furthermore, I have full video footage of Miss Lane framing Miss Carter for theft, which has already been submitted to the District Attorney's office as part of an ongoing criminal investigation for perjury and harassment."

The CPS worker blinked in surprise, glancing at the attorney. Pendelton's confident posture visibly faltered.

"Is this true?" the CPS worker asked Pendelton.

"We... we were under the impression—" Pendelton stammered.

"You were under the impression that you could intimidate us," Richard said coldly. "Now, inspect my home all you want. Look at my boys. Talk to them. But if you step foot on this property again without a signed warrant from a high court judge, I will sue your firm into bankruptcy, Pendelton."

After a thorough thirty-minute inspection—during which the triplets enthusiastically told the CPS worker how much they loved "Daddy and Miss Emily" and showed off their art projects—the investigator apologized profusely to Richard, stating that the complaint was clearly malicious and unfounded.

As Pendelton and the investigator left, Richard turned to Emily. She was leaning against the kitchen counter, visibly shaken by the encounter.

Richard walked over and gently took her hand in his. "I won't let anyone hurt you or take this family apart again, Emily. I promise you."

Emily looked up into his deep blue eyes, feeling the warmth of his hand wrapping around hers. For the first time, she realized that her feelings for Richard had grown far beyond those of an employer and employee.
