Chapter 8 - Healing the Past

Inside the main hall of the Westbrook estate, the evening shadows lengthened as dinner preparations hummed in the expansive kitchen. But tonight, the atmosphere was worlds away from the cold, sterile isolation that had defined the house for years.
Claire sat at the grand piano in the corner of the music room. The polished mahogany surface reflected the warm glow of the chandelier overhead. She hadn't touched the keys in years—not since her father passed away and the crushing weight of the corporate empire had taken over her life.
In the doorway, Ellie and Ben sat cross-legged on a plush Persian rug, deep into a game of building blocks, while Logan stood nearby, leaning against the doorframe with a cup of coffee.
Claire took a deep breath, resting her fingers gently on the ivory keys.
She began to play.
It was a soft, melancholic melody at first—a lullaby her own mother used to play when she was a little girl. The notes flowed smoothly through the room, rich and resonant.
Ellie stopped playing with her blocks instantly. She turned her head toward the piano, her eyes wide with absolute wonder. She had never heard her mother play an instrument before. She had never known her mother possessed such a hidden, beautiful talent.
As the melody shifted into something bright, warm, and uplifting, a tear slipped down Claire's cheek, but she didn't stop playing. She looked across the room and locked eyes with Ellie.
Ellie stood up, walked slowly across the room, and leaned against the piano bench, resting her chin on her hands just to watch her mother's fingers dance across the keys.
When the final note faded into the quiet evening air, the room was suspended in a sacred stillness.
"Mom," Ellie whispered, her voice filled with awe. "That was the most beautiful thing I ever heard."

Claire stopped playing, turned on the bench, and pulled Ellie into her arms, burying her face in her daughter's hair. "I missed so many songs, my sweet girl," Claire whispered, her voice choking with emotion. "And I promise you... we are going to listen to every single one from now on."
Logan watched them from the doorway, feeling an unfamiliar tightness in his throat. He looked down at his own calloused hands, realizing that while he had spent years protecting strangers in the shadows, he had finally found a place where he truly belonged.
