Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web

While Ellie rested under Dr. Harrison’s watchful eye, Claire and Logan retreated to the clinic’s private conference room. The atmosphere had shifted entirely. The grief and shock of the night were rapidly giving way to a cold, focused fury.
On the mahogany table between them sat a small, sterile glass petri dish. Inside rested the tiny titanium device Dr. Harrison had extracted from Ellie’s ear. Under a high-powered desk lamp, its intricate micro-circuits glinted like a mechanical spider.
"Marcus is running the serial numbers through our corporate intelligence database," Claire said, her voice icy and controlled. "Whoever manufactured this used custom-milled alloys. It’s not commercially available. It’s military-grade acoustic dampening hardware."
"Which means whoever put it there had access to specialized tech," Logan added, leaning over the table to inspect the device. He used a pen to gently tilt the petri dish. "Look at the base plate. There’s a microscopic etching. A serial insignia."
Claire leaned in. "Can you read it?"
"Needs an optical enhancer, but yes," Logan said. He pulled a small pocket multi-tool from his belt, popped open a magnifying loupe, and held it over the device. "It says... Vance Bio-Tech Labs, Division Four."
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The name struck her like a physical blow.
"Vance Bio-Tech," Claire whispered, her eyes hardening into shards of ice. "That’s my late father’s former business partner. Julian Vance."
"Your father's partner?" Logan asked, looking up.
"When my father passed away eight years ago, Julian Vance tried to orchestrate a hostile takeover of Westbrook Enterprises," Claire explained, pacing the length of the room. "He claimed my father had promised him controlling shares before he died. I fought him in court for two years and stripped him of his voting rights. He was forced out of the company in disgrace."
"And Ellie was born around that same time," Logan noted, connecting the dots.
"She was born seven years ago," Claire said, realization dawning with terrifying clarity. "When she was two years old, she contracted a sudden 'viral infection' that doctors claimed destroyed her hearing overnight. Julian Vance was a family friend at the time. He visited us at the mansion constantly."
"He didn't want Westbrook Enterprises just through corporate litigation," Logan said grimly. "He wanted total control of the family lineage. If you had no healthy heirs, or if you were permanently broken by grief over a disabled child, you would have eventually sold your shares for pennies on the dollar just to escape the pain."

Claire slammed her hand onto the table. The glass petri dish rattled. "He weaponized my daughter's body. He stole six years of her hearing just to manipulate a corporate merger."
Logan stood up, his jaw set. "Then it’s time to take the fight to him."
