Chapter 3 - The First Sound

In the quiet recovery room, the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound echoing off the pale walls. Ellie lay sleeping peacefully, her head resting on a soft white pillow, a small white bandage covering her left ear.
Claire sat in a chair right beside the bed, holding Ellie's small hand against her cheek. Tears traced silent paths down her face, but she wore a radiant, trembling smile. Logan stood quietly near the doorway, watching over them like a silent sentinel.
After what felt like hours, Ellie’s eyelashes fluttered.
She stirred, letting out a soft sigh, and slowly opened her eyes. She blinked against the gentle light of the room, looking around in confusion. She reached up to touch the bandage on her ear, wincing slightly.
Claire leaned in close, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn't want to startle her with sign language immediately. She wanted to test the miracle.
"Ellie," Claire whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "Sweetheart... can you hear me?"
For eight years, Ellie had only ever known the profound, crushing weight of absolute silence. She had never heard a lullaby, never heard the wind rustling the trees, never heard her mother's voice say her name.
Ellie’s eyes widened. She froze, her head tilting slightly to the left as if trying to catch a ghost of a memory. Her lips parted in sheer astonishment.
The first sound eight-year-old Ellie Westbrook ever understood was not music, laughter, or birds outside her bedroom window.
It was her mother screaming her name in a private recovery room after surgeons removed a tiny electronic device that had been hidden deep inside Ellie’s ear for six years.
"Mom?" Ellie whispered back, her voice small, tentative, and utterly magical.
Claire let out a sob of pure joy and buried her face in Ellie’s blanket, laughing and crying all at once. "Yes, my baby. It's me. I'm right here."
Ellie stared at her mother, listening to the cadence, the warmth, and the rhythm of a voice she had possessed in her heart before she even knew what sound was. Then, she turned her head toward the doorway where Logan stood.
She pointed a small finger at him. "The... the guard man."
Logan smiled, stepping a little closer. "Hey, kiddo."

"Your voice," Ellie said, her eyes wide with wonder. "It sounds... deep."
Logan chuckled, feeling a warmth in his chest he hadn't felt in years. "That's just my radio voice."
