Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Six months later.
The sun shone brilliantly over a small, picturesque coastal town in coastal Maine, casting golden light across the wraparound porch of a white-paneled farmhouse.
In the backyard, three four-year-olds shrieked with laughter as they chased a golden retriever across the green lawn. Ethan was leading the charge with a wooden toy sword, Lily was wearing a sparkling tiara while riding on a large red tricycle, and Leo was busy organizing a fleet of plastic dinosaurs in the grass.
I stood leaning against the kitchen doorframe, a mug of hot tea in my hands, watching the scene with a smile that felt so permanent it made my cheeks ache.
A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a solid chest.
"Penny for your thoughts," Adrian murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck. He wore faded jeans and a simple cotton t-shirt, completely unrecognizable as the feared Mafia boss of Chicago.
"I was just thinking," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, "that the new bookstore downtown is doing surprisingly well."
"Of course it is," Adrian chuckled softly, resting his chin on my shoulder. "Your manager is brilliant. And your primary investor has very deep pockets."
"You mean your anonymous donations?" I teased, turning around in his arms to wrap my own around his neck.
"Just supporting local business," Adrian smiled, his gray eyes dancing with genuine warmth and happiness.
"Mommy! Daddy! Come play!" Lily’s voice rang out across the lawn as she waved frantically toward the porch.
Adrian looked down at me, a soft, complete smile touching his lips—a smile he had reserved only for us.

"Duty calls," he whispered against my lips.
"Always," I laughed, before leaning up to kiss him deeply under the golden Maine sun.
