Chapter 6 - Inside the Lion's Den

The iron gates of the Vale estate loomed out of the predawn fog like the teeth of a giant beast, slowly parting as our armored black SUV approached. High stone walls topped with razor wire and thermal cameras surrounded the sprawling gothic mansion that sat on a private cliff overlooking Lake Michigan.

In the backseat, Lily stirred against my shoulder, her small hand clutching the collar of my sweater, while Ethan and Leo slept soundly on either side of us.

Adrian sat in the front passenger seat, his eyes fixed on the security monitors displaying the estate's perimeter feed. "Clear," he murmured to the driver.

The vehicle glided smoothly down the cobblestone driveway and came to a stop beneath the grand marble portico. Before the driver could even step out, Adrian was already opening his door, walking around to my side, and pulling open the door with practiced care.

"Let me take Lily," he whispered, reaching out with surprising gentleness for a man whose hands had ended wars.

"Be careful," I murmured, watching as he lifted our daughter into his arms. Lily snuggled instinctively against his chest, completely unaware that she was resting against the heart of Chicago's most dangerous underworld king.

As we walked through the massive double oak doors into the grand foyer, I expected guards with assault rifles and cold, menacing stares. Instead, the cavernous hall was eerily quiet, illuminated only by the soft glow of crystal chandeliers. A middle-aged woman in a conservative black dress stood waiting near the grand staircase.

"Mr. Vale. Welcome home," she said, her eyes widening slightly as she saw the sleeping children in our arms. "And... Mrs. Vale? I didn't realize—"

"Mrs. Vale is not a title we are using yet, Martha," Adrian interrupted smoothly, his tone leaving no room for questions. "Prepare the east wing nursery immediately. And notify security that no visitors are permitted under any circumstances—especially my uncle."

"Understood, sir," Martha replied, bowing slightly before turning away with brisk efficiency.

Adrian led me up the sweeping marble staircase, down a wide, carpeted hallway lined with priceless oil paintings of stern-looking Vale ancestors, and into a suite of rooms that looked more like a luxury hotel than a bedroom.

"This is yours," Adrian said, gently laying Lily down in one of the twin cribs already set up in the adjoining nursery, while I guided Ethan and Leo to the large, king-sized bed in the main room. "You'll be safe here. Guards are stationed outside the double doors twenty-four hours a day, and the security grid here is impenetrable."

"Safe," I repeated bitterly, sitting down on the edge of the mattress and rubbing my tired eyes. "Adrian, your uncle Viktor knows we're here. How long before he tries to storm the gates?"

"Let him try," Adrian said, his voice dropping into that dark, lethal register that made it clear why men feared him. "The estate is designed to withstand a military siege. But Viktor won't attack blindly. He's a politician. He plays the long game. And so do I."

He turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass knob.

"Where are you going?" I asked, a sudden spike of anxiety hitting my chest.

"To the underground vault," Adrian replied without looking back. "It's time to cash in every single favor, leverage every debt, and dismantle my uncle's empire before he even realizes I've declared war."

The door clicked shut, leaving me alone in the heart of the lion's den with my three sleeping children.
