Chapter 1 - The Encounter in Grant Park

The most feared Mafia boss in the city was proudly walking through the park with his beautiful fiancée, convinced he had left his past behind forever. Then he looked at my three children... and for the first time in his life, I watched the man everyone feared completely lose control. He had no idea that the biggest secret of his life had been buried by me for four long years.
I never imagined I would see Adrian Vale again.
Not in Grant Park.
And definitely not while he was holding another woman's hand, listening to her excitedly plan the wedding that was supposed to become his future.
The enormous diamond on her finger sparkled every time she moved, almost as if it wanted the entire world to notice.
I lowered my eyes and tucked my daughter's jacket around her shoulders before pushing the stroller a little farther down the path.
Today was supposed to be simple.
Just me.
Just my children.
Just one peaceful afternoon before another exhausting week of work.
Then I looked up.
My heart stopped.
Adrian.
He hadn't changed.
The tailored suit. The calm expression. The cold gray eyes that had terrified powerful men across Chicago. Adrian wasn't just a wealthy businessman.
He was the heir to the Vale family.
The Mafia empire that ruled through fear, power, and silence.
For one terrifying second, neither of us moved.
Then his eyes drifted toward my stroller.
Everything changed.
Three little faces looked back at him.
My daughter laughed as she pointed toward a bird sitting on a nearby branch.
My oldest son quietly studied everyone walking past, always watching, always noticing everything.
My youngest sat perfectly still, carefully lining up his tiny toy cars in flawless rows.
Then my daughter turned her head.
Those gray eyes...
His eyes.
I watched the color drain from Adrian's face.
Disbelief.
Shock.
Panic.
The man who had stared down rival Mafia families without blinking suddenly looked like he couldn't breathe.
Four years ago, he had shattered my heart with the cruelest words I had ever heard.
He told me to disappear.
To forget him.
To never come back.
He never knew I was already carrying his children.
And I intended to keep it that way.
I would rather my babies grow up without a father than spend a single day trapped inside the violent world of the Vale family.
That secret had kept them alive.
Until now.
Adrian's eyes refused to leave my children.
I knew exactly what was happening inside his mind.
Another second...
One more careful look...
And he would realize the truth I had sacrificed everything to protect.
"No..." I whispered, tightening my grip on the stroller.
"Come on, babies."
I turned and pushed the stroller as fast as I could.
Behind me, I heard something I never thought I would hear.
Not the voice of Chicago's most feared Mafia boss.
Not the voice of the ruthless Vale heir.
Just the desperate voice of a broken man.
"Maya... wait!"
I didn't dare look back.
May you like
Because if Adrian caught me today...
The secret I had buried for four years would finally destroy both of our lives.
