Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

The silence that stretched between us was heavier than any weapon Adrian Vale had ever wielded. Down the path, fifty yards away, Victoria Vance was still standing by the oak tree, tapping her foot in mounting irritation, completely unaware that the foundation of her meticulously planned high-society marriage was currently crumbling beneath our feet.

"Maya," Adrian began, his voice dropping into a dangerous, hypnotic register that had made grown men beg for mercy in the back rooms of downtown warehouses. "You have no idea what you've done. You have no idea what kind of target you've painted on their backs by keeping them hidden from me."

"The only target on their backs is the one with your name attached to it!" I fired back, my voice rising as protective rage overtook my terror. "If anyone in your syndicate—if your enemies, your rivals, or even your own councilors—ever found out about them, they wouldn't see my babies as children. They would see them as leverage. As weaknesses to be exploited, kidnapped, or killed to bring you to your knees! Do you think I'm stupid, Adrian? Do you think I didn't know what you were?"

Adrian flinched. It was a microscopic movement, a single twitch of his jaw muscle, but to anyone who knew him, it was equivalent to a physical blow.

"That is exactly why I sent you away," he growled softly, stepping closer, his imposing frame blocking out the sunlight. "The Vale syndicate was undergoing a bloody coup four years ago. The Moretti family was gunning for my throat. I couldn't protect you. If they had known about you, they would have butchered you in your sleep just to send me a message. I saved your life, Maya."

"And you destroyed mine in the process!" I shouted, finally letting loose four years of suppressed grief, lonely nights, and terrifying hospital visits where I had raised three infants entirely on my own while working myself to the bone. "You didn't ask me what I wanted, Adrian! You didn't give me a choice. You handed me a one-way ticket out of state, a bank account with enough hush money to choke a horse, and told me that if I ever tried to contact you again, your men would make sure I disappeared permanently!"

Adrian’s face paled further. "I never authorized my men to threaten you like that. I told them to ensure your safe relocation—"

"Your men are monsters, Adrian! Just like you!"

At my raised voice, Lily let out a soft cry and buried her face in Ethan’s jacket. Ethan immediately wrapped his small arms around his sister, glaring up at Adrian with an intensity that made the mob boss physically recoil.

Adrian looked down at his children, really looked at them, seeing not just his own reflection in their features, but the fragile, innocent lives he had inadvertently endangered simply by existing in their world.

"Listen to me very carefully," Adrian said, his tone shifting from defensive to an absolute, unyielding decree. "This conversation does not end here. You and the children are coming with me."

My blood ran cold. "Are you out of your mind? I am not going anywhere with you. I have a car, I have a home, and I have a life—"

"You have a target on your back the moment Victoria—or worse, my uncle Viktor—figures out who these children are," Adrian interrupted, cutting me off with terrifying efficiency. "Viktor has been trying to strip me of my succession rights for two years. If he finds out I have biological heirs... heirs who threaten his own standing in the family council... he will hunt them to the ends of the earth to eliminate the bloodline."

The name Viktor Vale sent a shiver straight through my core. Even in the suburbs, whispers of Adrian’s uncle—a man even more ruthless and sadistic than Adrian himself—had occasionally reached my ears through underground news channels.

"I won't let you drag us into your war," I whispered, my voice shaking. "We are walking away, Adrian. Right now. And if you try to stop us, I swear to God, I will scream, I will call the police, I will tear your world apart."

Adrian looked at me, his gray eyes burning with a complex cocktail of fierce possessiveness, deep regret, and terrifying determination. He knew as well as I did that involving the police was useless; the Chicago police department danced to the tune of the Vale syndicate. But he also knew that causing a public scene in the middle of Grant Park on a Sunday afternoon with his high-society fiancée watching from afar was a PR disaster he could ill afford.

"You're not walking away from me twice, Maya," Adrian said quietly, his hand sliding into his tailored jacket pocket. He pulled out a sleek, black titanium card and pressed it firmly into my palm, curling my fingers tightly around it. "That's my private, direct line. No filters, no secretaries. If you try to run, I will find you within the hour. But if you stay put in your apartment and lock your doors, I will come to you tonight after I handle Victoria."

"Handle Victoria?" I echoed, my eyes narrowing. "What is that supposed to mean?"

May you like

"Our engagement was a strategic arrangement dictated by the council," Adrian said coldly, his face hardening back into the mask of the syndicate boss. "It ends tonight. Because everything has changed."

Before I could answer, he turned on his heel and walked away, not looking back once as he marched back toward the waiting, furious heiress by the oak tree.
